Calling Jimmy Savile a "so-so presenter" is like calling Gary Glitter a so-so showman or Phil Spector a so-so Producer. Whatever did or didn't happen, JS, up until around 1974 (after which he often looked visably bored) was a pioneer of the "zany" style DJ/presenter, long before Kenny Everett, Dave Lee Travis and all the rest; prior to him, all we had were well-spoken "BBC" types like Brian Matthew, David Jacobs and Pete Murray.
It is this constant rewriting of Pop history that motivates me to write: some years back, I bought a book on TOTP that completely airbrushed him out of the show, with no photos and not even a mention of his name, yet he presented it more times than anyone else and gave the show its name!

With the mention of our rabid press and truth being overcome by time. I sometimes wonder about Savile and the real story. You see I cannot help but think he must have been some sort of superhuman mastermind to escape the ravages of our Red Top press for over 50 years. Yet in all that time all the press ever gave him was column inches for all the good work he did and his eccentricities. With the 500+ claims against him after he died (including just about assaulting everybody including the ill and the dead)- had he been alive our press would have torn him to pieces and been selling papers for weeks. Then there of course is the BBC. why on earth would they tolerate that behaviour (if true) from a so-so presenter who retired from TOTPs in the early 80s and then gave him his own show involving children where his poor presenting skills were often saved in the edit?...even if they did not want a scandal he could have been quietly told to 'go away' after TOTPs. Didn't Louis Theroux make an episode about it, sort of a "why didn't we know this"?

Anyone going to bother to close this thread? It's pummelling headlong in "Saville was alright really" territory.

Anyone going to bother to close this thread? It's pummelling headlong in "Saville was alright really" territory. Not at all. But I can separate the real person from the public performer/presenter/producer/etc, and if watching (say) JS introducing GG on TOTP, I get the same enjoyment I always did. And why shouldn't I?

That's fine but why do you think everyone needs to know that? I don't particularly care that savile introducing glitter gives you enjoyment but I'd rather people were asking about why there's no original Idle Race or original Honeybus footage out there rather than the moral dilemma that we face with two nonces.

..I'd rather people were asking about why there's no original Idle Race or original Honeybus footage out there.. People have asked here before, and the answer was that it's because the footage has been wiped. Simples.

I have no moral dilemma in watching them. Whether or not you do is up to you. If we started judging music on artists' personal lives, then we may as well throw away all our Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry records, with The Rolling Stones and The Who being questionable too!

I agree wholeheartedly but isn't this a WELL WORN PATH we're rethreading AGAIN!!?? It's boring. And thanks Kev Hunter for the beautifully sarcastic reply. (But saying simples is a black mark against you unless you're 18, which I doubt very much).
