I'm glad they've been able to include "Look Who It Is", even with John, George and Ringo "performing" as Shapiro's stooges. I suppose as they're not actually singing (or even miming), that makes it okay! There is actually a reasonable amount of Beatles footage in the RSG set, including bits that DC didn't release because it had the original credits on top of the video, so people will see a little bit of "new" Beatles in there. In fact, for the most part DC cut out the original credits and put in his revised credits on top of songs that were not the final song on the episode. That's why we now will have The Beach Boys "Dance Dance Dance". Well, you'll see.......

There's plenty of people who are Beatles fans who weren't even born when they split up, & there have been plenty of revivals of their music since then, with reissues & such.

Really looking forward to this. The price isn't to bad considering how much you get. I've ordered my copy, would of preferred it on a Blu-ray disc even though I assume it is PAL 720x576 standard definition, superior video codecs and higher bitrates of Blu-ray would of improved the picture somewhat, I remember having the VHS Ready Steady Go video the quality was quite poor. Hopefully they have cleaned it up a bit, Topaz Video Enhance would do the job.

This is only tangentially related but I was looking up Dave Clark's 80s releases of the RSG material on Discogs, and I just had to share how stunning the Laserdisc of the Otis Redding show looks. Can you imagine similar volumes for James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, The Who etc?. SIgh….

From fading memory of those 80's Channel Four screenings The Beatles song performances (mimed) were;
I'll Get You Twist & Shout (I think) It Won't Be Long Can't Buy Me Love You Can't Do That I Feel Fine She's A Woman Baby's in Black Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey Hey
no doubt there were more...
also on the show;
Paul had to judge the 'Brenda Lee impersonator' girl out of three girls from the audience as Brenda's 'Jump The Broomstick' is played
a rather bored John interviewed by Keith Fordyce trying to be funny (and failing) referring to his new book as being by a 'Literary Lennon'
George being interviewed by guest compare Dusty Springfield who called him 'gorgeous George' !
and Ringo getting a quick chat with Keith Fordyce from behind his drumkit
the lovely Alma Cogan goes as if to bash John with a placard she is holding when he introduces her latest record as by 'Alma Warren' ! - they then have a friendly chat whilst the songs is played...

Did I just read the inane ramblings of some doolally geezer about the waning popularity of The Beatles??
Or maybe I was only sleeping?

You weren't sleeping and I've never been to Deolali (it's in India, apparently - my old man used to mention this a few times: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deolali_transit_camp - I think he worked near there on some project for Enron years ago) My rather long-winded point is that these back catalogues of famous artists/bands from a bygone era, I don't think are worth quite as much as people say they are. I would probably remove a zero (or two) from the sums quoted for a more realistic figure. Entire generations of people who grew up with 2 or 3 channels have a warped perception of 'fame' as something much longer lasting - but with the internet and a glut of information and media at our fingertips - fame is much, much, closer to Andy Warhol's '15 minutes' than the decades we believed they'd last. I think something akin to Hollywood accounting is going on here - or the valuations are based on older markets and systems before people had 1000 channels of crap on the TV to choose from. I'm not denying their importance or their place in history - I'm just saying that I find it hard to believe they're worth x millions when you have entire generations growing up now who have barely heard of them and are far less likely to buy their music on Spotify or wherever it's being streamed. Another 5 to 10 years and I see that stock plummeting very sharply. Time waits for nobody and I don't think the Beatles are any exception.

I'm glad to see that John Lennon judging the art contest is included in the DVD set, as the winner - Jeremy Ratter - is more well-known in cult circles as drummer for Anarcho punk legends Crass although he later worked under the name Penny Rimbaud.

Only one more in fact: She Loves You from their 1963 appearance! Strange to think that The Beatles were only on RSG as a group 3 times (far less that The Stones, Who, Kinks, Hollies you name it) but because all their shows were kept they loom disproportionately large amongst the surviving material.

I guess time will tell, but I REALLY don’t see the Beatles sliding off like that when the first generation fans start dropping off. They’ve already proven their enduring appeal to (a significant fraction of) Gen X, Millenials and now Gen Z. Part of it is it’s not just the music but it’s the personalities and the lore that appeal down the ages. Same with Elvis. No they don’t have the same wide pop appeal that he had in their first flush, but that kind of legendary status endures.

I wonder how the recognisability-factor has affected the faces on the cover of the 1967 Sergeant Pepper LP? (An 'LP' is a type of vinyl record. Vinyl is a type of plastic.. Plastic is a material much-used in older physical media. Physical media is...).
Try some of those 'Reaction To...' videos on Youtube. "This is, like, my first black and white movie...". "I've seen photos of John Wayne/Marilyn Monroe, but this is the first time I've seen them in anything," "Who's Boris Karloff? Are we meant to know?".

The Beatles chose the people on the cover themselves on a "people we like" basis at the time (1967) some are obscure now, some were obscure then, Gandhi was withdrawn/ hidden due to sentivities by the Indian wing of EMI, Hitler (provocateur Lennon's choice) was hidden behind others. The 'Welcome The Rolling Stones shirt on the doll belonged to Mick Jagger after a fan gave it to him. The important factor is that it gave an overall effect of a crowd/audience for The Beatles/Sgt Pepper 'lonely hearts club' band. Some have suggested the flower bed spelling out 'The Beatles'in flowers is actually a grave (for the beatles as they were, for something else? their old selves now they've changed?

The 'Jump The Broomstick'dance competition is the one I think won by Melanie Coe, who later became the inspiration for The Beatles 'She's Leaving Home' on Sgt Pepper when Macca read a newspaper story about her running away from home.

I'm a little guilty of knowing who old film stars are without seeing anything they have been in.
Marilyn Monroe seemed to be became a style icon in the 1980s, & her posters were probably bought by a lot of people who had never seen any of her films, though arguably it was harder to do this at the time.

I think the popularity of The Beatles will continue unabated, if the Get Back documentaries are anything to go by (and more to come) The new technical AI process that Peter Jackson has used on the audio (and video) puts them back in the mainstream spotlight. The new mix of the Revolver album went back to the top of the charts after 50 odd years and their albums still sell remarkably well and there is the release of the single Now and Then recovered recently given the Jackson treatment. Seems each new generation discovers them and they go through another resurgence. On You Tube they are at the top of the "Reaction" videos amongst young people - for example this young couple are probably the most popular in that field of reaction videos and they refer to them as GOAT - Greatest of all Time - Indeed their Hey Jude appraisal has had over 600,000 views Have a look.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_Ecq-HT7J4
