This is a fascinating thread although it really does hammer home the vast amount of (now) priceless pop music archive that has been lost over the years. Out of interest, would programme contractors such as London Weekend have kept records of the dates when shows were junked? I'm just wondering at what point in their shelf life series like 'Mike & Bernie's Scene' would have met the bulk eraser? Would it have been within a year or two of transmission or much later than that?

Frankie Howard Meets The Bee Gees
The Disc and Music Echo dated the June 29th 1968 stated ...
Bee Gees Group was to have toured Japan in July but postponed the trip after arranging to film Frankie Howard Meets The Bee Gees which also stars Julie Driscol and Brain Auger next week for Thames Television showing in the autumn.
Meanwhile the NME dated the 4th May 1968 stated filming would begin on the 7th July it was filmed in Colour for American TV but was screened in B/W for British viewers. It was to be shown on ABC in America.
If as both above entries agree, filming began on 7th July, was the filming done by Rediffusion, Thames predecessor, as Thames Television began on 31 July. Or perhaps by ABC London Weekend Television? The show was transmitted by Thames on 20 August 1968.
This Television Special was written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
Is there a chance they hold a copy of this programme in their personal archive?
June Whitfield, Valentine Dyall and Arthur Mullard were also in this show.
The Bee Gees Group in this show was Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Vince Melouney and Colin Petersen.
IMDB has John Robins as both Director and Producer for this Television Special. While another on line source says David Frost was the Producer?
Does anyone know or can they find out which songs The Bee Gees and Julie Driscoll with Brian Augur sang in this Television Special?
Tuesday 20 August 1968 Thames Frankie Howard Meets The Bee Gees 8.55 - 10.00 pm
NB: Made in Colour, it was originally scheduled for showing on ABC, then for Thames opening night 30 July 1968
The Bee Gees
Cilla Black
NB: Other ares show An Evening With Jack Benny

The Bee Gees' drummer Colin Petersen told the NME that the show was "full of comedy skits" which as the brothers Gibb were not especially known for their sense of humour may explain why Thames Television apparently lost enthusiasm for the programme originally scheduled for their opening night; with the consequence that not all that many can have seen it. These stills are presumably from the show - beegees.com.br/frankie-howerd-meets-the-bee-gees-1968/David Frost I believe set up the consortium that was successful in bidding for the new franchise. The German TV special "Idea" from a few months later which also had Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll, & the Trinity appearing with the Bee Gees still survives www.youtube.com/watch?v=62Vx6JOifyUmissingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/5479

This is one that definitely survives.. What show are you referring to? 'Idea' certainly survives, but I don't think the Frankie Howerd show does.

The Frankie Howerd one. Barry famously had state of the art video recording equipment from the moment he arrived in London in 1967. I'd say his personal archive is full of amazing stuff including this special. It just defies logic that he wouldn't have his own copy of this. Anyone interviewing him soon??

Also it would tell us if the Producer was the same person as the Director, or someone else
