Controversial BBC drama. There seems to be some confusion as to its archive status. I've heard that it all exists but I was under the impression that 2 of the 5 episodes are missing.

If there's an injunction on it official or unofficial then getting any info is going to be difficult.

The " Watching Ourselves; 60 years of Scottish TV," Which was made in 2012 seems to imply the tapes are still all in Glasgow safe. I dont believe there is any offical injunction on the programmes, but I believe the SNP would still have a fit it appeared on the telly today. which is shame I would love to see it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCwIblx2VPc&ab_channel=EoinMacFreeman

I doubt very much that the powers that be in the SNP would have any sort of a fit. When the series went out originally it was extremely popular with Nationalists certainly in Glasgow. At that time it was probably more appreciated that as the original book was co-written by a Conservative Cabinet Minister (Douglas Hurd) it was highly unlikely that the SNP would be portrayed in any positive way. If anything the BBC would be most likely to rediscover it just in time for the next referendum (as the rules would mean it could not be shown during an Election period which I believe does not apply to a referendum). It's quite sad that only those of us of a certain age will remember this very powerful series which opened political debate in Scotland in a way that very few fictional series do.

Political parties seemed to have had much more power back then, these days it is ridiculous that they should still hold such power, if someone wants to release it, or what's left of it, they should. Sounds like a good drama.

Hello! Resurrecting this topic just as I got a recent update on this, following the Scotsman's recent article on it's 50th Anniversary:
"Our recent search for Scotch on the Rocks found that at BBC Network there is a TX mastered 2” videotape (from film) kept in London for episodes 1, 4 and 5 which still exists and has been reformatted for preservation. It is likely episodes 2 and 3 were wiped possibly quite soon after transmission. As you’ll know, it is sometimes the case that we only have part of an old production surviving, though it’s not always clear what led to that happening. We also have records of “Scotland copies” previously existing on the original 16mm film, and these show that all 5 episodes were junked in 1978 by Film Unit in Glasgow, on permission of Head of Drama at the time, again not an uncommon occurrence in the late 1970s."
So I fear that indeed episodes 2 & 3 are indeed missing.

'Junked' probably means that someone in the Glasgow film unit took home the 16mm b/w film, i.e. the telerecording.
If it turns up, it might yet be restored to colour using Chroma Dot Colour Recovery.
But the search would begin in Glasgow, presumably by getting a Scottish newspaper to run an article about the series, and asking in it if anyone still has the 5 film recording reels. A nice task for any forum member who lives in Glasgow!

That's kind of what has happened, as I got wind of them being missing through the recent Scotsman's article, & chatted to someone in the BBC on enquiring further. I guess there is the potential of film collectors here in Glasgow who knew folk in the film unit, as I'd be curious to know how many shows perhaps had a "Scottish copy" made, if the broadcaster locally wanted a different time etc (like Wales in the 70s with S11 of Doctor Who).
