Does this not fall under chit chat?

I'm not sure about the forum rules, about this.
For my part,I much prefer the idea of staying in Europe and leaving the EU to staying in the EU and leaving Europe.

I would say that as long as the discussion can remain civilised, I'm happy to let it stay. However, please bear in the mind the forum rules about being polite to other members. Please bear in mind also that any global insults pertaining to voters on either side do BY DEFAULT apply to any supporters posting in here.
Despite the evidence of the last few weeks, it is possible to have calm polite discussion on this topic without resorting to personal abuse. Let's play nicely, please.

Well,on a more serious note, the Swiss have now formally withdrawn their application to join the EU... Anyone who thinks that things are sweetness and community-thought south of Calais might want to read this: www.theguardian.com/world/2010/may/09/belgium-flanders-wallonia-french-dutch (Headline: "Belgium doesn't exist, only Flanders and Wallonia as Dutch and French communites live apart.") While a recent poll in France showed a majority wanting out.

Sorry,R.It's me.I was (almost) punning about 'East of Eden'.Apparently, there's a song as well as the bible.Calais came to mind because of the recent riots. I was throwing in a few tidbits,as the Americans say,to suggest that all is not harmonious in Western Europe (I could have mentioned increased support of parties of the Right),and to make the point, often ignored, that the British aren't the only sourse of discontent/acrimony.

What a result. I keep thinking of that bit in The Thin Blue Line, where the EU representative says "And you continue to eat Prawn Cocktail crisps, although we have TOLD you not to!".

Personally I reckon our government finally having the power to do away with the human rights act and pesky workers rights will be the biggest result from this. Happy days all round await ordinary people, free from such tyranny!

I'm impressed by the way that the British, unlike so many other countries, didn't descend into fascism,Communism,or Nazism in the 20th century. For those who haven't read it,I strongly recommend Orwell's England Your England www.orwell.ru/library/essays/lion/english/e_eye not least the passage about how: the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings....it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box. All through the critical years many left-wingers were chipping away at English morale, trying to spread an outlook that was sometimes squashily pacifist, sometimes violently pro-Russian, but always anti-British. It is questionable how much effect this had, but it certainly had some. I've seen too much talk over the last year about how xenophobic we all are...Anyway,as it turns out,we live in revolutionary times. It should be interesting.Wish I'd put a fiver on 'Leave' when all the opinion polls were so sure the other way!

I still haven't recovered from staying up all Thursday night / Friday morning!
Surely the eventual result from free movement of citizens throughout Europe will be one big homogenised mass, and Britain would be one small part of a United States of Europe. We here do not want to lose our identity in this way, and frankly I cannot understand any other European citizen who does either!
I have nothing against people from other countries, but this is Great Britain; we have our own identity and culture. Leaving the EU will be painful for a while, but I think it's a price well worth paying.
The nasty comments coming from some of the members of this "club" of nations only goes to show that it's a club best not to be a member of! The whole world is going to pay a far more terrible price if leaders keep chasing this impossible dream of fusing people of different cultures together.
I wish all the European nations well, but we simply wish to preserve our British way of life.
Personally, I'm still finding it hard to stop smiling. I'm so glad the British have finally had the guts to get out of this awful European Union.
Colin.

Sorry, I have no wish for this to degenerate into insults, but I can give RWels a very simple reply:
Have no worries, we won't be trying to get back in. Your sarcasm and the points you make demonstrate only too clearly why Britain wanted OUT.
Colin.

I'm really not sure that this is a good idea...but if we are going to be blunt about such things,I admit that I like chips with brown gravy!
