im glad to see this thread gaining momentum again, im just wondering who has the rights to all these old games ? many of the companies who covered the games, ie, abc and atv are no longer with us. did they sell the rights to their sports output as they did with their entertainment upon their dimise. we all agree that most of the old footage we see comes from bbc, did they have an extra-ordinary contract that allows footage to be used over and over again. one last thought! wouldnt it be great to see old footy on itv 2 instead of some of that garbage they show in their "off peak "hours.

The 1979 Boxing Day derby match of Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield Utd at Hillsborough stadium, Sheffield was before my time but next year is the 25th anniversary. Wednesday won 4-0. I believe it was recorded by BBC North (Yorkshire) news. I would love to see it. By the way the match which was in old English Div 3 was attended by over 49,000 - still a record).

With regard to Robert Pedleys thread I can confirm that the April 1967 ITV coverage of the England v Scotland match - indeed with Hugh Johns and Billy Wright - exists in its entirety. The whole game was released on video three years ago. I do have good contacts in tv sports departments and have researched Scottish internationals. ITV in London have many entire games from the 'Seventies (including the '74 World Cup) and England internationals. STV have fared less well and (similar to BBC Scotland) retained only goals or important incidents from club and international matches during the 'Sixties and 'Seventies for the usual reasons we know only too well. Unfortunately neither STV nor BBC Scotland seem to have a definitive list of their current holdings and the selection process seems somewhat inconsistent. Indeed some of the lost footage may well exist in other archives, a good example being Scotland v Czechoslovakia in 1977. STV appear only to have retained the goals but fortunately, and probably because England did not play that evening, the game was networked and ITV London have the full monty with Brian Moore comentating.

Thanks Ronnie, it's interesting if a little disappointing to learn that the attitude of the Scotish authorities was similar. I've seen a a few clips of 60's internationals from both BBC Scotland and STV and somehow hoped that they represented only a segment.
Looking at TV guides from the times it seems that Some from the 1960's [particularly STV] seemed to be retained as [20 minute or so films] as they weren't televised live or 'electronically' exccept on rare occasions anyway until the 70's. So I wonder if there is hope for matches prior to around 1970? Robert
