I'm normally OK with Jon Pertwee as the doctor, but one review site reckons he gave up trying to act part way through his time as the doctor & just played himself.

Out of the 12 I chose, Inferno, Planet of the Daleks, The Mind of Evil, The Three Doctors and The Dæmons are my five top favourites.

I've always felt that his best is early on and the Pertwee era gets weaker with each series (although there's a temporary step back up for series 10). He seems to act with depth in Spearhead and the rest of series 7 (as the grittiness of that series requires), starting to taper off as he gets further into the role and just settles for a sort of shorthand flamboyance which represents "The Doctor" (not unlikably so though).

Another enjoyable poll. This was my formative era of Doctor Who when I became hooked on the show. I loved the UNIT format and when Pertwee got to use the Tardis again, perfect casting throughout and some very strong stories - Inferno, Green Death and Daemons being my favourites. The Dalek War saga is another favourite so I'm hard pushed even to restrict myself to 6 stories. Sad to see The Mutants pushed down to below even the Time Monster. The Mutants themselves were beautifully crafted and are a memorable 'monster'. I still enjoy watching it but then I also love The Krotons and The Web Planet too. There's no accounting for taste

Jon Pertwee was the first real Doctor that I was introduced to. (Peter Cushing dosen't count) So I have a soft spot for him. Spearhead from space was the first story that I saw and I loved the Autons from the start. I remember watching The Three Doctors over and over again and I loved the Curse of Peladon. I enjoyed the various aliens in it. Another one of my favourites was the Time Warrior. I used to watch that one over and over again. Lynx was supurb. As was Professor Rubeish. I always felt that the Pertwee era was stronger with the U.N.I.T family as well as the Master. (Poor Roger Delgado. Such a brilliant performance) I somehow didn't feel that it wasn't the same after Jo Grant leaving although I really liked Sarah Jane Smith. (Her over Rose Tyler any day)
However I feel that due to the varying degrees of visual quallity of some of the exisitng film prints I have not enjoyed it much as I should have. However the Pertwee era is one of my favourite eras in Doctor Who.
I am quite impressed however with the quality of colour restoration on a lot of the stories. The Silurians for instance as well as The Terror of the Autons and The Dæmons to name a few. I didn't know that some of these stories had lost their colour copies previously. I was also put off The Mind of Evil for that matter as well. However I am very pleased that the Pertwee era is more of a complete era then the other two doctors. Also my hat off to the colourisation of episode 1 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs. I understand there were problems with "Chromo Dots"?
All in all I think very highly of the Perwee era.

Also my hat off to the colourisation of episode 1 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs. I understand there were problems with "Chromo Dots"? Invasion of the Dinosaurs episode 1 was completely in black and white with no chromo dots. Mind of Evil 2-6 and some episodes of Ambassadors of Death had black and white copies with chromo dots which could then be re-converted back to colour.

Mutants is an interesting story with above average creatures and a diabolical baddie. As for standards I'll take Krotons as a great example of Troughton, typical but not perhaps a classic. I'm staying silent on Web Planet but we can't agree on everything! The Pertwee era worked best with UNIT and the early stories were more serious and sinister with dollops of Quatermassy themes - wonderful stuff. I had to adapt to Pertwee after starting out with Troughton but it worked.

This survey shows our personal preferences but I'm surprised to see Inferno rated higher than any of the stories ranked 2- 10 (above) but that's just my biased opinion. So what did us viewers think of these stories first time around? I've used Lowe/Stammers/Walker's The Seventies book to lift viewing figures (best guess as the charts don't show detailed graphs) - but I've been surprised at the outcome - Inferno is bottom by a long way with Time Monster next lowest but Silurians is way lower than we've rated it (one of my favs) whilst Day and Planet of the Daleks did really well (we have them near the bottom). Three Doctors 10.3 million planet of daleks 9.8 day of daleks 9.6 invasion of dinosaur 9.6 death to daleks 9.5 curse of peladon 9.4 carnival of monsters 9.1 planet of spiders 9.0 colony in space 8.5 daemons 8.4 spearhead from space 8.3 time warrior 8.3 frontier in space 8.0 mind of evil 8.0 sea devils 8.0 terror of autons 7.9 mutants 7.8 monster of peladon 7.6 silurians 7.6 green death 7.5 ambassadors of death 7.4 claws of axos 7.4 time monster 7.3 inferno 5.5

Each to their own John. I'm surprised that The Three Doctors is rated higher than The Claws of Axos myself. The worst Pertwee stories in my opinion: 1. Monster of Peladon 2. The Time Monster 3. The Three Doctors

It's very interesting how we all like different things. I really enjoyed lots of the Pertwee stories, watching them as a youngster and enjoyed them all, although when I became a whovian in the early 80's I looked back differently at them. I remember being so disappointed with all the dalek stories, because everyone talked about them, whilst also disliking the three doctors and curse. So I am clearly out of touch with people because, apart from my favourite Inferno, I loved Monster of Peladon, Mutants and Time Monster, (the doctor created the greatest ever gadget in this story). I am very clear looking back, loved 16 stories, but I voted for 11, 10 of which are in the bottom 12 according to the viewing figures above.

Invasion of the Dinosaurs episode 1 was completely in black and white with no chromo dots. Mind of Evil 2-6 and some episodes of Ambassadors of Death had black and white copies with chromo dots which could then be re-converted back to colour. Invasion 1 did have chroma dots (as did Mind 2 -6 and Ambassadors, which were all colour recovered) but one of the colours was weak, producing unbalanced results. Mind 1 seems to be the only DW episode without chroma dots.

Thanks to James for this opportunity! Very few duds in the Pertwee line-up though Time Monster and Death to the Daleks are amongst the weakest. I've stopped at 8 with a slight bias towards stories that made most impact on first showing in the 1970s rather than my re-visiting via DVDs since. So it's Spearhead, Sea devils, Silurians, Ambassadors, Daemons, Terror, Curse and Frontier. My re-visited verdict would have added in Time warrior, Mind of Evil and Carnival. I love the Pertwee era with a passion but the actress who plays Jill Tarrant in Death to the Daleks always makes me cringe with embarrasment every time she makes an amateurish reaction shot to the camera to indicate some action in the middle distance which only the characters can see.A few years ago Gary Gillatt completely annhilated the serial in his review of the DVD release in DWM.It was so funny that I could never take the serial seriously ever again! The fact that the space explorers all had nice middle class names and probably got their supplies delivered from Space Orcado was just hilarous! The review was probably the best ever in terms of wit and I mourn the passing of the original series reviews in DWM.

I agree - the dalek stories were amongst the weakest though they suffered by comparison with the 60s classics (except for the corny Chase). Mutants and Monster of Peladon were pretty good though I also rate Curse. In spite of my earlier surprise at Inferno being top in this poll I do like it as typical of the early Pertwee "industrial complex" but I just feel that the others were better - spooky astronauts, sinister dummies and quivering Silurians were so much better than Carry On Screaming werewolves... Whatever the differences in opinion I cannot regard any of Pertwee's stories as complete duds even after seeing them again as a cynical old grumpy: UNIT, gritty storylines, inventive monsters, Roger Delgado and two superb side-kicks in Jo and Sarah. My only complaint is the over-enthusiastic use of that colour overlay thingy stuff...

re Jon Pertwee's performance as The Third Doctor:
I felt early on JP played it far more 'alien' than later on
Later, when he became more 'settled in' and comfortable with the role (and had proved to be just as popular as his predecessors) Jon bit by bit began adding more & more of his own little foibles - the addiction to gadgets & doing all the super Bondish action stuff, plus the quips re being an 'old friend' of EVERY famous historical figure ('Boney I said...') and being a bit of a general 'know all', 'done it all', 'seen everything' got the T Shirt...etc began to creep in plus his Doctor got all 'fatherly' and full of wisdom to clueless Jo and perhaps a bit too much of a 'shining light bulb'-ish heroic figure talking DOWN to Jo & the Brig & Benton etc...
while over time the Sonic Screwdriver becomes too much of an easy 'get out of jail' thing (literally)
Earlier he's desperate to get back to space & time travelling, and is a little less 'cosy' than he later became, he's more of an 'alien' figure who is not always firmly on the side of UNIT in his views at least....which made him more interesting I felt
the Pertwee v Rog thing was fun, great banter, and enjoyable romps but slightly reduced the thing to a bit of a panto level at times as you KNEW Pertwee would always 'win' & Rog would always 'live to fight another day' etc...thus it began getting predictable
Some of Pertwee's execesses were passed onto Tom Baker (knowing everybody whose anybody etc) & the sonic screwdriver solving everything later became a curse !
His stories are never less than entertaining tho' and his Doctor is consistantly 'reliable' - tho' 'Qui Quai Quad' & cross dressing as a lady cleaner are examples of it getting a bit too silly at times (another later dangerous path for the character & show)
Overall Jon Pertwee was a terrific Doctor but his earlier less 'cosy' part of his time & Jon's initial portrayal probably are the strongest part of that era for me.
