What was the date of Joe Cocker's first appearance on TOTP singing "A Little Help From My Friends"? I'd like to find out because it has legendary status in my family due to my Dad's reaction to Cocker's singing.

It was shown on (IIRC) the Totps Tenth Anniversary Show Dec 1973 as a short clip and that show survives.

Thanks all. Stunned silence, and finally anger and disgust at the "Waaauugh!" He didn't like pop music generally, but passing out-and-out screaming off as singing was too much for him. Not my opinion of course, I just thought it was funny.

It is a rock staple now. But the treatment of the song, and Joe's performance of it, both live and on the record, were radical at the time. Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Brown made a similar impression. Older generations were at best bemused, and likely to be a bit un-nerved.

I saw Arthur Brown's first TOTP performance and was completely knocked sideways, even though I was only 11 at the time. In later decades I experienced the same 'wow' feeling from seeing a debut UK TV appearance which then changed the course of my listening, notably Alice Cooper on OGWT (1971), the Doctors Of Madness on Twiggy's show (circa '75/'76), the Sex Pistols on So It Goes ('76), Nirvana on The Word ('91) and Suede at the Brit Awards ('93).

My Mum has always chuckled about her Aunt May's response to Joe on TOTP, "Who on earth is this?" "Joe Cocker" "Well, he can Cocker off"

My younger brother, who was three at the time, burst into terrified tears when the God of Hellfire appeared on TOTP. Funnily enough he later became a huge Arthur Brown fan!
