Last time I saw one of these (not The Wheel in Space, but another existing Troughton) was at the Wessex Film Fair, in the 1990's, I think the dealer wanted about £70 for it. Price has gone up much more than other films on 16mm.

Listening to the audio of Wheel, you become immediately aware of why the censor cuts were made as is also obvious in the surviving footage of those clips. The screaming and howling of the victims as they are electrocuted and killed is harrowing, even now. It would have given me nightmares if I had watched it as a child!

Regardless of whether it's a dupe or not (most couldn't tell or care less tbh) 16mm Doctor Who goes for a premium. I hope it encourages more to come forward.. If it was a Hartnell I'd probably go for it myself, Good to see stuff like this surfacing. My gut tells me it's price tag is a little high as a starting point but its certainly a sought after item. So that's a decent ballpark figure to start bidding on? i.e. It's not LUDICROUSLY high. I'm interested. I told you it wouldn't sell A dupe, if you have someone who's REALLY keen, will go for £750. Opening the auction at £800 was too rich.

I agree that a copy wouldn't be as valuable, but I just had a thought - presumably there would be no good reason for the BBC to acquire this? There's no known censor cuts in the BBC version that might not be present in the copy, for example? Or is the print that the BBC hold known to be another of the copies? The copies were made from the BBC originals, so they'd be the same. The copies in the archive were smuggled out by the BBC employee concerned, copy negatives professionally made and multiple copies run off and sold. sigh......... if only they had done that a few years earlier....... (ie pre junkings )

Maybe I'm missing something, but I never saw the point of making pirate 16mm dupes of episodes. Why not just telecine them and sell pirate video copies ? The potential sales must be far greater !

True if you were a Film collector and you wanted something of a better quality than a multigeneration tape, then a film dub was your best bet. Too bad ian didn't meet this guy in the early 70s, they could have saved a lot from the skips

I suppose having metal film cans housing 16mm film prints of Dr Who is akin to having a life size Dalek in your room! It would look great and show you were a serious, devoted fan!

We take for granted the amount of hd material we have on bluray today. If one wanted to collect tv shows in the 70s the most affordable option out there was 16mm or 8mm. While sadly much bbc did not end this way, many American syndicated prints after they outlived their usefulness, ended up being available at an affordable price as used prints. Even into the era of videotape and dvd, many old time collectors still appreciated the quality of a film print compared to video. While dr who was a kinescope and may not have had true hq picture resolution like spearhead, if one wanted to add a dr who episode to their collection their options were limited.
But you are correct, as each generation passes, technology allows us to have more at a lessor cost and smaller space.for example, in the early 80s a blank video tape would cost 15 if you were lucky and one thought it was amazing to get 2-6 hours of video for that price. Now we can buy season box sets on dvd for comparable price.

Is there a gap in the market here ? Maybe someone should produce authorised 16mm prints of selected episodes for (wealthy) collectors. If they were made from the restored versions of the episodes, they might end up looking better than the original 16mm prints did !

They should have a system where they produce prints under a pre-order type thing. So they only produce the exact amount they're going to sell. It's either that or I'll buy a camera and make my own illegitimate 16 mm prints!

In all probability, this is one of the illicit 16mm duplicates made during the 1980s rather than being a genuine BBC Enterprises print. It's certainly one of the episodes known to be duplicated in this period. Richard, Are you able to list the episodes that were taken and copied? For future reference when similar sales come up.
