The only person who would have performed Under My Thumb (the Jagger/Richard song) at that time IS Wayne Gibson, whose version was a hit in 1974 as part of the Pye Disco Demand re-releases. I believe it was recorded by Wayne sometime in the 60s but was not a hit until 74. I remember him performing it on TOTP at that time, and I too have that version on Audio-cassette.
Why do you think it "clearly is not Wayne Gibson"? Do you consider him very distinctive? I never heard him do any other song, myself.

I didn't know the 500th Show was missing : they still show Tony Orlando singing "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" from it at times. How come does that clip survive then? Ah, hold on, maybe they used it again on the 1973 Christmas show, which was repeated a few years back in its entireity on BBC2 (and which I taped!).

As I recall, they were partway through My Generation (round about the infamous line, in fact) when sound (and pic?) was lost. It returned a couple of minutes later, but the sound had been routed back from the USA and thus was a few seconds behind the vision. There were also technical problems later when McCartney sang Let It Be. I have the highlights programme on VHS (somewhere) but haven't watched it for a while.

TEXTSaw Les, and Mud, perform at Butlins in Summer 1993, and he seemed on his last legs then : very thin, and the other band members had to hold him up while he attempted dancing to Tiger Feet. He made comments about it being his last gig for a while because he needed to 'go away somewhere'. I'm amazed he lasted another 10 years +.

Some time ago, I posted on the TOTP2 message board that I have a few audio recordings of 'missing' TOTP performances from 74/75, but was told that this was of no interest, because I did NOT have whole shows. Is this still the case?

THE CEDAR TREE a soap, a cross between crossroads and upstairs downstairs .IE crossroads production values with an upstair downstairs type set. As featured in the old Bobby Goldsboro hit "Cedar Tree, how big it grows" .. OK, not really. Used to watch it sometimes. You never saw the Cedar Tree as I recall.

My aunt / stepmother also appeared on this in the early 60s, when I was too young to fully comprehend what was happening (being born in 1959). She lost out because she forgot a pen (I think) even though my grandfather yelled the answer frantically at the screen. I doubt that any of the series survives.

now that WAS a fantastic kids show, with the first appearance of the gorgeous Christine McKenna, later to star in the awful Flambards. Would LOVE to see that again (47A, not Flambards!)

I used to quite like this show, featuring Cash and a host of 'dolly birds' cavorting in sports cars as I recall : in the Anglia region we got the shows which were about a year old, so the hits were all 'old' , but the best thing was the inclusion of alternative releases that never made the chart. It's the only time , for instance, that I ever heard/saw Dana performing "The Other Side of Me".

I use to think it was Danny Kaye doing the voice over on 'Tales of The Riverbank'. Years later of course, I thought obviously not! as why would a huge Hollywood Star be bothered with a little kids programme? The voice over I realise now was more Canadian than Ameircan. Surely Johnny Morris did all of the Tales of the Riverbank voices?

I shouldn't imagine Bruce Welch would be too keen to have The Shadows' clip shown. Not true. When I saw The Shadows perform in concert on their farewell tour last year, "Let me be the one" was included very early on, and spoken about with great affection by the band. It is, after all, one of our very best Eurovision entries.

He did, of course, have a solo UK hit with "Shame and scandal in the family".

Must admit I've never seen him : has the CD got the fabulous "Aqua Marina" on?
