Recording the Pink Floyd bit would be very important. Did you see it at the time? I've still yet to find anyone who saw it. I'm curious to know if the Floyd were seen on screen or were they playing over a montage of space footage? (Although it wouldn't have been Apollo 11 footage I realise that, because they didn't have any yet.)

Does anyone know how long the BFI version was, as mentioned at the start of the thread? Answering myself. It's still listed on the BFI page. 110 min. So it can't have leaked from there then.

Referenced in the latest Private Eye www.private-eye.co.uk/Is there a reason it's became topical? I believe copies of the documentary appeared online a year or two ago? A couple of weeks ago it was all over youtube, other video sites, filesharing sites, etc. See: Streisand Effect. Interestingly it was a 90-minute version not the original 105 min version. Maybe it was a version meant for overseas, as they often edit for timing etc? Does anyone know how long the BFI version was, as mentioned at the start of the thread?

Ah, that BBC link looks like a similar one (different url) someone showed me a few years ago (I remember the page said something like "you shall not pass"). When I searched for series older than a few years it never had a complete series, just a small sample of about 1/4 of the series maybe. But when someone is uploading "Aliens in the Family" for example, complete with the 'broom cupboard' links at start and end, it can only come from off-air copies though, can't it?

But the people who have "stolen" our TV heritage from the online portals What do you mean by online portals? You mean things like Britbox? If the TV shows recently removed from youtube were already available to view on 'online portals' (whatever they are) then we'd all be watching shows there instead of needing people to upload the material to youtube. Didn't I already say the crackdown was probably because of the leaking of the Royal Family 1969 documentary, oh wait you posted this twice didn't you? Funny, I wasn't remotely interested in an old Royal Family documentary, but "Streisand Effect" meant that it ended up being reposted all over the net and I just had to see it.

I’m sure that I read somewhere that Fawlty Towers run time was just the way the individual episodes were made, & that they were very reluctant to trim them as it would spoil the flow of the plot. This caused on-going scheduling problems as a result. I kindof wish more TV shows were made with this attitude (Although I can fully understand why they're not!). Many a time a show must end up too long and it's necessary to cut a good scene. Conversely there must also be times when a show is too short and some unnecessary chaff has to be added to pad it out.

but according to BBC genome series 2 episode 2 had just 30 minutes on debut and then 40 minutes for repeats. Can anyone explain that? Probably nothing mystical, it probably overran when first shown because they'd mistakenly only scheduled a 30-min slot.

Update: So far I have only found home recordings and music. I was going to try and do more today however I socially aware up with symptoms of Selenium poisoning and had to go to hospital. I may have ever so slightly opened up the recorder and looked around it before the post about the toxic elements. They kept me there for six hours! They measured my hearts electrical activity three times, they had to prick my finger twice to measure my blood sugar level because apparently I did not bleed well enough the first time. They also took at tasted my blood and made me wait with a crazy old drunkard for hours. To make things worse, I am currently fasting to my body reactions and chemicals are not what they normally would be. One of the Nurses had too "Google" Selenium poisoning as apparently they had never had a case of it before. The worst part was, that if I had been poisoned they would have to report it and take away my reel to reel recorder! Thankfully my symptoms were not bad enough for them to want me to say and they were not sure what I should do with the recorder. They told me to come back if my symptoms worsen. My plan is to clean the outside of the reel to reel recorder and if my symptoms do get worse, go to a different hospital and not mention the machine. How was your boxing day? Apart from, obviousy, concerns about your health I am also extremely surprised that an old reel to reel could be so dangerous, since you have not eaten it. I can only guess that the part that blew might have contained selenium which then became airborne??? Google mainly leads to people who took the wrong supplements. So... you okay? When he said they tasted his blood I assumed the entire post was an attempt at humour.

If recording from a reel to reel to a computer is too large a step - just concentrate on connecting the r2r to your hifi so you can hear the reels playing from your hifi speakers. Once you've achieved that you can move on to the hifi to pc stage, but there's no point even contemplating that if you can't do the first stage!

So many experts here. So what would they suggest for sticky shed? For a non-baking method - Get some surgical spirit/white spirit/methylated spirit. Clean the heads and clean the spindle the tape passes over just before it reaches the heads. Play the tape and using some of the spirit in an eye dropper keep that spindle lubricated while you play the tape. You'll probably be able to play a good portion of the tape before you need to stop and clean any gunge off the heads and spindle, then rewind a little bit and continue (any interruptions in the audio can be joined seamlessly afterwards).

My reel to reel player has phono sockets in the bottom (or they'd be at the back if it was standing upright but I have it lying flat). I connect phono leads from the r2r to my hifi. I can play reels and have the sound coming out of my hifi speakers. The hifi connects to my pc via the pc's line-in socket and then the audio can be recorded with any sound recording software. If you have a line-in socket then it's not necessary to overcomplicate things with audio interfaces! My Reel to Reel Player's sockets are: "RADIO", "MIC", "EX. AMP", "LS.15Ω". Is "EX. AMP" the same as "Phono"? Mine has two sockets for Line Out (one for left channel and one for right) and two sockets for line in, and a din socket (I don't know what that's for, I hate din sockets, I've never managed to successfully connect to them, they're best forgotten). By phono leads I mean these. If you've ever owned any hifi equipment you've probably got a drawer full of sets of those leads. The two on one end plug into Line out on the r2r and the other 2 connect to the hifi. (And connect the hifi to line-in on the pc - see the pic RWels posted.) (Obviously if your r2r doesn't have those sockets then you'll need a different set of leads. You're just connecting stuff with leads - use whatever sockets & adapters are necessary.)
