I watched it the other day. The first one looked to be broadcast quality, the 2nd one with Toyah had a tracking line along the bottom but was decent enough quality, the 3rd one looked to be from a well-knackered tape, lines all over the place, and looks like it'd been cropped to remove any tracking lines, had any wobble stabilised etc. But this is not a complaint merely an observation. It's nice to get to see these things because it serves nobody just to lock them away because they're deemed lower quality.
It made sense to broadcast the best quality ones first, in case anyone was put off by the quality and decided to tune out. Can anyone tell me were any of them preceded by an announcement about the quality? I was out of the room between episodes so missed any announcements that may have been made.

Thanks. Yes it's a complicated area. And am I right in thinking that if a radio show (from 1960 for example that would otherwise be PD) had been released on an LP in 1980 for example then it wouldn't become public domain until 50 (or 70?) years after the 1980 release date rather than the original airdate?

So for a radio show - let's take music out of the equation completely because I'm not interested in the PD date for that specifically and wish I'd never mentioned it - so let's say an episode of The Archers or some dull Radio 4 discussion show or something, something is Public Domain after 50 years? So currently it'd be anything earlier than 1972?? But what about that 1962/63 date? A few things I've read have said that's set in stone and isn't moving any further for some reason.

I was talking about BBC radio shows in general, non music shows. I only tossed in "The Beatles Law" as a joke because it's some peoples belief that the public domain date of BBC radio shows is fixed at 1962 because certain people don't wan't all the Beatles stuff to become PD.

A lot of old British radio is surely Public Domain now How old does a BBC recording have to be to be classed as public domain? I've seen some people say it's anything earlier than 1963 (aka 'The Beatles Law'), can anyone confirm?

Did the Paul McCartney thing have stupid captions with "interesting" "facts" in the middle of every song? An annoying thing invented by ITV's The Chart Show in the 80's which can now be seen in every BBC music show. Unnecessary and annoying.

It annoys me that live sport can still cause the next show to be postponed or cancelled. In this day and age with so many channels there should be a more elegant way of dealing with it.

Is the list in any particular order? Normally #1 is supposed to be the best, but the top 2 are the worst ones in the list.
#2 travels forward in time accidentally, with no way of controlling what time you travel to. #1 You appear in your chosen time naked, without your clothes, boots and motorcycle.

I never saw it but at the time, from reports, I was led to believe that he said "you groovy f*****s" - referring to the other people hanging around him while he was doing the link.

The top picture is exactly what the rainbow patterning on my copy looked like. I don't recognize the patterning on the bottom picture at all. Mine too. It went from ok colour in parts, to what we see in the top picture, looking like colour bars superimposed with the picture. I don't have the tape any more (Ironically I junked it) but I still have my notes where I noted that episodes 2,3 & 4 were the worst of the set, with 2 being slightly better than 3 & 4, and the colour clearing up for the end of episode 4. Episode 7 was the best of them. In addition, the end credits were missing from 2,4 & 6.

Soundcloud for short clips, Mixcloud for longer recordings, although mixcloud has this annoying quirk where the longer the recording the lower the bitrate it is (and standard bitrate is a bit low as it is), so it's best to keep things under 2 hours to avoid them sounding like crud.

Does anyone know what TV show this is? The video is of the band Cruella De Ville performing "I'll Do The Talking" on a tv show circa 1983. Someone suggested the show might be "Anything Goes" (a show on RTE) but I think it was wishful thinking based solely on the fact the band is known to have appeared on the show once. There's plenty of clips from Anything Goes on youtube and I compared them and I don't think it's from that show. The band are from Northern Ireland though so an Irish show would be a reasonable guess. The hosts are seen at the start of the clip (and at the end) so it should be possible for someone who's seen a lot of old music shows to recognise them. The annoying thing is I think I've seen them in another clip, I just can't remember what. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlyEQKzRTbU

In the early days of Ch4 I used to like the weird/experimental film evenings where they'd show around 3 hours of weird film shorts. They'd show some really weird stuff but it was compelling viewing. I think C4 tried showing RTE's Late Late Show for a time. Tried? They showed it for years.
