Hi all an update. I now have a good VHS Player that is fully working with my Blu-Ray recorders, The first few tapes pulled from my archive have played well. They included the 1987 Thames run of Randall & Hopkirk, and 1999- run of RTL Life. The recorders record SD from VHS/DVD in 720x576 and the result has to be re-encoded via videostudio x8 to be able to store on Blu-Ray. One of the next things i back up will be the episodes of Boss Cat, and will let you know the condition and episodes and maybe a still. Hopefully there will be more than one run of recordings. So far only one episode found, but in very good condition. There should be others. Its good that the opening and closing titles are the difference from the existing episodes. There is a very bad jump where Boss Cat was inserted ie [click] Boss Cat title card [click] then Episode Start. "TC Minds the Baby" Here are a few Low Quality samples, due to the 1mb file size limit, the videos are only the differences. Not bad for a 28 year recording.

I have now found the tapes of the following episodes, have yet to play/copy them
"All That Jazz" , "Dibbles Double", "Long Hot Winter" , "The Grand Tour", "Hawaii here we Come" , "Million Dollar Derby" and another unlabelled episode, which turned out to be another recording of "Long Hot Winter".

World Distributors aren't the BBC, and they wouldn't be bound by the BBC's "no free advertising" rule. H-B owned the copyright, not the Beeb. Because of the Annuals I always thought of him as Top Cat, I don't remember the BBC rebranding at all. (Off topic, but how on earth did the BBC justify their weekly free plug for the Ford Zodiac in Z Cars?!) I meant that despite the fact that kids would/should have known it as 'Boss Cat',seeing it called that on TV every week, the annual made no compromises, and stuck to the HB title.Given that he wasn't a character of Superman's standing,I wouldn't have been surprised if WD went for 'Boss Cat' as a title that parents would recognise as one that would appeal to their kids. I'll have to look it up,but there were problems with Dennis the Menace-the UK and U.S. versions debuting in the same week,I believe.Pretty sure that the Ketchum (U.S.) version had to change its title on annuals in the UK. Precisely. And the Beeb's 'rebranding' of the Teenage Mutant Turtles from "Ninja" to "Hero" WAS carried over to ALL UK merchandise based on the TV series. So the "who owns the copyright" argument doesn't stand up at all.

I'm assuming whoever did the licensing for the UK distribution of the Turtles decided on the renaming,
An odd example around the same time of a rename was Potsworth & Company, which was the original working title but in the USA was changed to The Dream Zone Kids late in the day, but was exported under it's original title.
The theme was re-recorded to reflect the change of title.

Just seen the Halifax TV ad again.Have to wonder how many people remember Top Cat. When the lady says "What's your name?",I'm so hoping he's going to say "Boss Cat"!

It was certainly repeated into the early 1990s by the BBC, & maybe on one of the digital children's channels since then.

I remember as a kid everyone seemed to ignore the Boss Cat nonsense and still knew him as TC, after all, the sound track was unaltered.

The title might have reverted back to Top Cat by then, even when I was young I was confused by it being billed as Boss Cat, when every reference in the show as to Top Cap.

Just seen the Halifax TV ad again.Have to wonder how many people remember Top Cat. I thought it was an odd choice but I enjoyed the advert. If it's any indication, "Cats in 'Top Cat'" was one of the categories in the final round of Pointless last Tuesday. The contestants only came up with one answer "Benny", which scored 21. There was only one pointless answer and I suspect that's because nobody realised Fancy's real name is "Fancy Fancy". I didn't. ~iw

Now,if they'd asked for the names of the cats in 'Boss Cat'...
Pointless can be fascinating in the way that it can show how many of the icons/national treasures of the 60s,70s,80s...are not as well known as we think!

Now,if they'd asked for the names of the cats in 'Boss Cat'... Actually Richard Osman did say "sometimes called Boss Cat", but what the original survey asked is another matter. I agree, results on Pointless are often surprising. ~iw
