Thanks for your contact regarding ‘Top of the Pops: 1979’ on 16 January.
I understand you had concerns with regards to the BBC Four DOG and I note your reference to a large, dark triangle.
The BBC Four DOG hasn't been changed, although we have recently introduced an HD variant for the new BBC Four HD channel of course.
We've noticed on one or two occasions a technical hitch with the DOG notably where the programming is in 4:3 (as is the case of course for these archive TOTP programmes) so apologies for anything amiss you may have spotted but we hope it hasn't distracted you from these great archive music and videos from the 70s.
Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.
Kind Regards
Nicola Maguire

Good edition this week with a noticeably clearer picture and 4 X 3 and no DOGS !
Particularly enjoyed DR Feelgood, Darts and great live vocal from Judas Priest,
The audience reaction to the Jackson's performance of a very underrated single "Destiny"
Was bizarre - one of the world top soul bands and they looked bemused - ah well no accounting
for taste.

It's not on the quite good compilation that has most of the big hits of the Jackson 5 & The Jacksons, along with Michael's Motown solo singles.

The SD picture has been looking better this year - possibly since the HD channel started. There was a discussion here quite a while back about how BBC Four derived their 4:3 picture by... well, OK, I can't remember the details but it sounded bad. It was something like the master signal actually had the letterbox black lines down the side and the broadcast signal was obtained by resampling the visible portion of that picture. If anyone knows what I'm talking about (!) do you happen to know if maybe they've stopped doing that now and have started doing it properly since the HD channel started? Maybe? The data rate hasn't increased noticeably, there are still plenty of digital compression artefacts, but the picture looks sharper.

Former BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis has been found not guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26177136Mr Travis was released on bail until a further hearing, to be held at the crown court on 24 February, to decide if there should be a retrial on the two outstanding charges.

A very diverse edition this week
Highlights for me were
Thin Lizzy - Waiting for an alibi - Phil Lynott looking slightly stoned
Toto - Hold the Line (Concert footage) - Great underrated band = the Porcaro brothers, Steve Lukather
Herbie Hancock = You bet your love (Vid)Featuring Herbie using a head mounted microphone years before the likes of Janet Jackson popularised it.
Black Lace doing a Smokie - Oh Carol rip off for Eurovision
Although the Jam performance was a bit Staid Strange Town sounding like a rehearsal for Eton rifles.
Strangely my Sky late night recording of the show stated it was 72 minutes long - but it had attached the recording
to the following episode of keeping up appearances - so it was really 40 mins.
