Hi Alan, I have a strong feeling I have seen that footage before, I could be wrong though, so I don't think it is a new piece of footage. I have downloaded it to stash, just in case it is rarer than I think.
Just out of interest, does anyone know if there is a published list of Barrett era floyd TV appearances that exist and those which are not known to exist? I would have thought it is the sort of thing a researcher would have put together, considering the large following that early Floyd have.

Unfortunately my copy isn't here, but hopefully someone whose copy isn't tucked away in a box in their ex's garage 200 miles away might be able to look it up. /edit: frustratingly, there's a lot of "unidentified shows" for which no tracklisting exists: www.pf-roio.de/voio/TV.html

Hi, yeah that's Jugband blues, you will find it on Youtube, many times over I believe.
I think it's a promo video (like "Apples and Oranges", which has RWaters miming Syd), and I can imagine that the existance of the promo forced the song's inclusion on "Saucerful of Secrets", whereas "Scream thy last scream" and "Vegetable Man" didn't have, so did not.
.. if you see what I mean.

Well that's odd, because I have a VHS featuring supposedly "official" promos for STLS and VM, and yet never heard anything about a promo video for Jugband. Of course one should never believe the wording on RoIO items, of course, but it does strike me as odd. That said, 1967 and in colour - is this possibly another Pathé item like "Scarecrow"? /edit: an untransmitted one, possibly?

It was made for a cultural exchange magazine film/programme for North America, probably towards the very end of 1967. It's been on-line/youtube for at least 7 years now.

Yeah nice to watch it again but sadly it's old news...got excited for a minute. I think it was made for a Canadian "thing". It is classic though. The story i heard re this clip was that a couple of film students borrowed this and Magical Mystery Tour from Blackhill (floyds management) and didn't return them thank god. The clip showed up 5 to 10 years ago but the original soundtrack was damaged hence the dubbing on of the BBC Top Gear version. How much longer must we wait for a comprehensive Barrett/Floyd rarities boxset with dvd component ? Ridiculous. They could always donate all the proceeds to a mental health charity and credit the whole box to Syd Barrett if they feel so troubled by it says me getting angrier by the second. And what's with that UFO footage supposedly stashed in Holland that the band allegedly deemed not worthy ? and the Top of The Pops See Emily Play and............................

I think it's historical importance (in Pink Floyd and pop music terms) outweighs the condition of the tape. A brief explanation on black card preceding the clip stressing it's significance and the almost miraculous nature of it's survival is all that is needed. If someone manages to upgrade the video in the future then that can be dealt with when it happens. To be honest i think an enthusiastic fan with a computer and too much time on his/her hands could do as good a job at a fraction of the price to EMI/Floyd management or whoever. If it hadn't leaked on youtube then i'd have to wonder what the point in keeping it is if no-one can ever see it. This stuff is pretty much 50 years old, it should be available for all to see preferably with the artists or their estates getting royalties. Where's the rest of those Top Of The Pops episodes ? Is anyone doing anything with them or waiting for technology to arrive to improve the picture by which time there'll be no-one left who cares ? Sorry to be grumpy. I'm still waiting for the The Shadows and Rolling Stones bbc Sessions 50 years after the event and at least as far as those go i do have a right to hear them coz i pay my licence fee!!

One of the good things about the TOTP clip is the fact that it wasn't telerecorded, so what we see now, in degraded form, looks like what what would have been seen on original broadcast but in way better quality.

I am in complete agreement with Ashley here. I cannot honestly fathom why Floyd and co sit on any of the existing material. I 100% understand that it is their material and so they can let it gather dust if they really want, but what is the point? A Barrett era DVD or DVD set would be welcomed by many fans I will hazard a guess. They would make money to buy fancy things or cars for their grand kids and the fans would be happy. I honestly cannot see why material this popular gets sat on in terms of official releases. Even if some of it isn't in exactly broadcast condition I would still be happy to purchase an official release. No accounting for some people's reasoning I guess :/

As mentioned above, the Jugband Blues clip was made for overseas distribution, to go into a magazine film as an example of what the UK was up to culturally at that time. It was produced by the Central Office Of Information but unfortunately is missing from their archives. This copy is from an 8mm source (it was probably made on 35mm), which surfaced a while back. Sections have been used by the BBC in recent documentaries on Pink Floyd (e.g. Seven Ages Of Rock) and is only "rare" in the sense that the only known copy is this privately held poor quality print which needs a damn good clean up!
