I'm new here, having come across this site searching for this particular song.
I going to go against the Disco 2 consensus and instead I suggest that it came from another BBC2 programme called Up Country.
I can't find any information on Up Country, but it was a series fronted by George Hamilton IV. I think there were at least two series, but I can't be sure. I remember tuning in specifically to see MSC. They were on last, after a few acts that all seemed to me at that time to be pretty awful. George introduced them as "a bunch of psychedelic hippies" which they most certainly weren't.
If this version did come from Up Country, that would explain why no-one can find any trace of Savoy Brown or Mighty Baby

I think you're right, and they aren't the regular programme.
According to Guinness British Hit Singles, Woodstock first entered the charts in September 1970. I'm sure the show must have been recorded before it reached No 1, but it was definitely No 1 in the charts when the show went out. By 1972 Matthews had formed the band Plainsong.

The BBC have some inserts for the show and this is one of them. They don't get seen very much though (at all, in fact), which is why people don't know where the clip comes from.
