Thanks for your post Liam
It's great to be able to put faces to this great song!... the lead singer looked so laid back never opened his eyes once.
I hope we can find out which show this came from?

Not listed on the BBC Motion Gallery either. My guess would be 'Disco 2' as it's a BBC production

Hi William, yes this is my fave version of the song - so evocative of the era. Iain Matthews always did look a bit "out of it" when he sang! Disco 2 does seem to be the most likely option. The studio looks pretty small and apparently the one the BBC used for that show was REALLY tiny. The You Tube video was posted by MSC's bass player Andy Leigh who has put up another number from the same session here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2fyHbsiBWk

Oops.I should have said that the IMDB link I give above leads to MSC's only listing on the site: 'Disco 2' 25/7/1970.

Cheers Paul, that's good to hear. Wonder if they've got the Might Baby footage as well? Woodstock was a massive hit at the time this was filmed so I don't see why the Beeb couldn't slip it into a TOTP2 or Sounds of the 70s show. I'm sure plenty of people would want to see it.

Just to avoid confusion, i am 'assuming' it's back at the BBC as it's got the standard bbc timecode on it, and appears to be a master tape rather than a domestic recording.

I've got an email address for Andy Leigh, might contact him and see if he can clarify the situation about where the tape resides.

Here's an 'New to the Charts' article from the NME dated 3rd October 1970 introducing the band to the public the song has just entered the NME chart that week at number 29. below, is a small b/w picture that went with the above 'New to the Charts' article; I wish the picture had been in colour, then we might have been able to check out the background better, to see if it's the same as the background on the 'DISCO 2' footage? or maybe it's a TOTP footage?

Love this song. Great quality clip, hard to believe its 43 years old as it looks so crisp. It may not be at the BBC as the You Tube video was posted by MSC's bass player Andy Leigh. Maybe he managed to get a copy for himself from the master tape before it was wiped. If its not at the BBC he may return a copy if they dont have it

The appearance is from Disco 2 (clips rather than whole shows) and the recording resides with the BBC (although it has never been repeated, to my knowledge, so most people wouldn't know it existed). All such material should be utilised, rather than gathering dust in a vault, largely forgotten.

Thanks for clearing that up. Such a shame it hasn't been repeated when so many other song videos get shown over and over
