Just got hold of the 6 "missing" episodes, Vol 1 and 2 of Tales of the Riverbank on VHS off E bay. The videos are, interestingly made by Channel 5 Video Distribution Ltd, a Heron / Polygram Company. Does anyone know of any contacts who worked for this company who may have knowledge of further episodes previously released or archived still? Is this company anything to do with 5 formerly known as Channel 5 in the UK? I've no idea personally, but if so, does anyone know if they own the series now, and if so do they have archived material? (Also posted on Ray's You Tube Thread). Still looking for a decent 2nd hand VHS recorder to copy them to DVD. Richard, you should be able to get one at a charity shop, hopefully with a little tag saying it's been checked for safety.Cash Converters might still sell them.Expect to pay £5.00 to £10. Reminds me that I once bought a DVD player with a disc already inserted-a disc of the grossest...but this hasn't got much to do with Tales of the Riverbank.I don't know though... Ha ha, like it. Will have a dig around in Craft in Aberystwyth tomorrow - good idea.

Freecycle & the like might have someone local wanting to off-load a video machine, you can put requests on some of them.
There is a charity shop near me which has specialises in furnishings & electrical equipment, often at a reasonable price.

Latest info, the early series of colour "Tales of the Riverbank" which were shown on C4 have had their master recordings sold to a film company and subsequently lost, but copies apparently still exist on previous video releases. The final series master exists and has been released recently on DVD. With regard to the 2 original B/W series of Tales of the Riverbank, the situation remains unclear. My enquiries continue.....

Latest info. This trail has gone cold but haven't given up yet. Latest email from Ian Campbell Richard Yes, David passed away on the 17th September in Portsmouth as a result of congestive heart failure. He was 87. To the best of my knowledge, all material associated with the BW Series 1 and 2 of Tales of the Riverbank were passed to SW Films in 2007. My wife and myself have collated the contents of David's house and we found no material relating to either Series 1 or 2. David was always very reluctant to discuss the matter because he was so angry over the feature film which he considered to be a complete travesty of all the human qualities upon which the Tales of the Riverbank genre was based. Best regards Hammytime Productions UK

It would be a bit of a shame to put it mildly if these have been lost during the last few years following the collapse of SW Films. On the other hand they could well be in a corner somewhere gathering dust rather than landfill.

Let's have a party, The party, The night the moon came down to bathe, The aeroplane ride and Bubbles all copied to disc in the best possible quality and sent to Kaleidoscope. Also holding a copy for the BBC, when I can clarify where best to send it. Unfortunately the copy of Hammy leaves home was badly damaged, and so I haven't copied it, BUT luckily I have sourced another copy on EBay and will do the same assuming it's Ok when I receive it.

Wait, so the missing episodes were simply on an official VHS release?

I have just been reading this thread for the first time with great interest as Tales was a childhood staple for me. Where did these high quality copies come from Richard? Are they dubs from the VHS release dupe master or something like that? I am still a bit confused from reading the thread what exists and in what format. Well done though.

I have the 6 mentioned from the official VHS releases; would love to see all the other monochrome episodes - & if the 6 mentioned here are from a better source & transferred to DVD would happily buy those again too!
As has probably been mentioned; the episode 'A Ride In Guinea's Jeep' was on the BBC VHS release 'Watch With Mother: The Next Generation', & is one of my favourites of the 7 that have been available.
It was an amazing series & although the colour ones released on DVD are very good they don't compare to the 1960's ones; partly because of the atmospheric beauty of the b&w photography.
Though the film stock used on the colour ones out on DVD does have a nice texture ( unlike most colour film/video today ).
I haven't seen the movie version with Fry/Coogan etc - but, & especially now after reading some of the thread here, it never seemed very appetizing; & I can't really understand why they made it in that way to begin with!

Yes, I was trying to work out if those episodes Richard had found were of better quality than the VHS release too. I am interested to find out where they came from if they are.

To recap, all the episode masters are currently lost following the sales of all the archive material to SW Films which has subsequently gone bust. The only survivors known so far from the black & white series are the 6 episodes on the 2 VHS releases. (Plus now the episode you mentioned above, A ride on guinea's jeep). All I've done is buy VHS copies off EBay and use a 6 head Sharp VHS & record using HQ setting to DVD-R, using HQ cabling, etc. To be fair the results are pretty good. I have had to buy another VHS copy of Hammy leaves home off EBay as the original was damaged, looks like I will have to try and get a copy of A ride on Guinea's Jeep too! If anyone is aware of any more episodes on official VHS releases please let me know as it is probable that this is all that survives.
