Does anyone in this vast world know of a man called Toby Chamberlain? I wont say anymore on my story until someone replies because it may be considered redundant if nobody knows him..

Not personally, but doesn't he build the Dalek reps for This Planet Earth?

I seem to recall that Toby used to have quite a collection of props and costumes back in the 1980s and then, as far as I recall from a local press report, pretty much sold the lot.
Not so long ago he was working as the project manager up at This Island Earth and he built the extra Dalek that was used in the special DVD edition of Day of the Daleks this year.

He might possibly but heres the story. A friend of mine spent a weekend in Sawbridgeworth with this Toby Chamberlain character in the summer of 82 or 83. They were all fim students at the time. Ok so the story goes that this Chamberlain character had every missing story on VHS tape. Where he got the money from we'll never know considering the price of tape back then but that is by the by. He had the all labelled up Power of the daleks, Reighn of terror etc. Now heres the interesting part, I dont wish to call my friend a liar and I honeslty have no reason to but he claims to have actually watched the Macra terror episodes 2 and 3 on VHS tape. Now if anyone can get hold of this Chamberlain chap we may have a possible lead. I see no reason why my friend would lie but it all could be a big mix up..

Toby was quite well known in fandom during the 1980s, so I would doubt that he would have had any missing episodes without people knowing about it. I know someone who knows him though, so I'll pass on the message.

My friend whose name is Darren Haining may very well be bullshitting. But I guess we'll never know!

Sounds like a load of Betty Swollocks if you ask me. I'd be prepared to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who knew someone with one or maybe a handful of missing episodes, but all of them..?
When I was about 18, that ghastly woman who runs The Who Shop tried to convince me that she knew someone with every single missing episode. God knows what she was trying to achieve.

I will agree with you that the ghastly woman in the Who shop is ghastly lol. I've never known anyone so patronising and I believe she told me the same story in the 90's...

It's Haining or Hanning. I barely see him. He's from Chelmsford and he grew up in the family business of antiques and memorabilia etc.

I'm fairly new to this caper, but your friend's story sounds like rubbish - either a misremembered experience or idle talk. Worth checking out, though, I suppose - the potential gain (two eps of The Macra Terror; I simply can't believe the rest) is worth the small amount of effort it takes to get in touch with the gentleman in question.

Like I say he has no reason to lie and being a film student in the 1980's with the drugs and the copius amounts of alcohol being taken and consumed and being in your late teens the concept of watching missing doctor who had about as much importance as watching the young ones or the thompson twins on TOTP. But he got them from somewhere. So yes definately worth a look..

Doesn't hurt to chase it up. Worst case scenario is it turns out to be a of old tottenham, and we're no better off than we are now. Best case scenario, though...

Seems to me that the 'VHS' angle here suggests this to be complete nonsense because if someone actually had a VHS copy of a missing episode, they would have had to have recorded it from somewhere. The only possibility would have been either a transfer from 16mm Telerecording, or a copy off of an older format video recorder. In either case, if such transfers were done, the chances of there only being a single copy, and none of the originals ever turning up is impossibly slim.

Very true and I can't agree with your statement more. But I do believe that this just makes the case even more fascinating. I mean come on we've had a million pointless leads before so there's nothing wrong with trying out this one.
