The AYBS? pilot DOES look quite good.
Perhaps Legend priced themselves out of the market because, maybe, the work they did on "Planet" ended up being more time-consuming/more trouble than they originally quoted their price for, so with that experience, they upped the quote to something that seemed more realistic or to make it 'worth their while' to undertake it a second time?

david c: i think west wing studios or TimeBrush should do ep 1 of mind of evil or the other option is to leave it in black and white.i also hope that someone would colourize the entire series of Timeslip too.

Is it not possible to raise some of the money for this sort of venture indirectly through fandom, by, say, having a limitted edition version with some extra bits and pieces in?
I really don't know the maths so I'm just blue-sky thinking here, but 5000 copies sold directly by the BBC for an £5 extra each would make £25K - if that's enough to help.

May I add to that. I've freelanced in various roles in the online media industry and these types of things can really add up. You've got to pay someone to produce these extra bits and pieces, someone to film it, someone to edit it - even if it was me (I do all three stages and I'd work for practically nothing for this*) there'd still be a massive amount of legal and technical difficulties that'd need to be worked through and I'm not convinced the cost would be met with the volume sold. TBH you'd be better off raising 25k on a just givingpage and asking Babelcolour to take a year off and see how much he could do! Even after that it'd be a fan thing and not something I'd expect the BBC to go anywhere near it. In short, I don't think its viable - but it's nice to dream! *I've shot part of a DVD extra for a classic who DVD release.

I'm not sure I understand where the legalities come in.
I'm not suggesting that there be some sort of contract between the people who buy the limited edition version and the program makers.
I see no reason, though, why the limited edition DVD shouldn't say on it - x ukp of the value of this purchase has gone to fund the colourisation process, in the same way that I can buy things now which tell me that some portion of the cost has gone to charity.
(Not, incidentally, that even *that* is needed).
Sure there's going to be some cost to producing a limited edition, but the whole point is that there will be extra profit made for the BBC, which the buyers of the limited edition will know helped make the whole thing possible.
I would have thought it just came down to the maths.
