Legend does a lot of post-production 3D conversion work now, so colourisation isn't really a big thing with them now. The profit lies elsewhere.

Im disappointed that legends priced themself out. Because of the importance of this preservation work, it would have been a good deed if that legends did do us a favor (its only a few hours of material) and would have given them great publicity also. That being said since we already have the chroma dots recovered, Im hoping that, as technology costs reduce, the BBC will be able to do it in the future. Just as we are now using a different company for animations.
While many may not like the idea, if it gets us more in the long term, I have no problem if they release other stories first if they feel that they need more time to do it right.
A colour mind of evil would be amazing.

Beyond the interests of a few thousand people across the whole world, this really isn't particularly important preservation at all. And forgive me, but are you really seriously suggesting that they do many hours of work cheap/for free just for publicity..? Take my advice - whatever you do, don't ever start up your own business...

Wasnt suggesting for free Rob. Just suggesting they do it at an affordable price where they make money and dont go for the juggler. But why should they..? They're a business, why should they give their time away..? And don't say "publicity", because there wouldn't be much, and it wouldn't pay their staff.

Rob, please read carefully. I never said give anything away. I think we just both have different business models. Some believe in maximizing profits. I believe in making a fair markup. And I sleep very well at night If there is information Im missing, then Im willing to listen. But we may have to respectfully disagree on this one point yet still remain friends. Hope thats ok

Hi George!
No, I realise you don't mean for free, but even doing it cheaply is giving away something..! Of course we're looking at two different viewpoints - I dare say that you, as a fan, would probably offer your time cheaply out of loyalty, Legend have no such loyalty and would have no reason to charge anything less than market rate. I just think the publicity reason isn't really worth bringing up, as it wouldn't be much of an incentive, because it wouldn't bring in the type of work they're most interested in taking on.

I wouldn't be surprised if they got Legend Films to re-colourise 'The Mind of Evil' 1 The problem is that Legend have pretty much priced themselves out of the market now. The cost of colourising an episode now is far, far more expensive than it was when Planet #3 was done. That's why Legend wasn't used to do any work on Invasion of the Dinosaurs #1. That is a shame, Are there any other companies out there who do this sort of thing satifsactorily? I hope the results with IOTD#1 are not indicative of the "standard" we can expect to see. Though I still haven't obtained a copy of Wiped yet I recall that Invasion (OTD) Pt 1 was recovered from a private collector as a positive print, so I'm assuming that if a "master" negative still existed a better result could be obtained. I haven't seen the Dads Army episode or the Are You Being Served? pilot that had this done so I can only go from what I've seen.

Although Dad's Army and Are You Being Served are examples of colour recovery rather than colourisation. Two completely different things. Worth pointing out as some people talk about them as if they were the same.

I have actually seen the "Dads Army" ch 7 (as Seven 2) have been repeating Dads Army as part of thier "classic British comedy" selection I only saw about 5 minutes of it around at a mates place and pointed out to him and his missus that "I'm not sure but I think this is the Ep that they coloured with the "dots" they didn't filter out when they copied it" they were both amazed!!

It is pretty amazing, yes. I'd go so far as to say that the Are You Being Served is even better though. If you didn't know about the history of the ep or colour recovery, it would probably pass for the master tape to the average viewer.

Indeed :-) I've seen original 2" videotape of similar vintage which didn't look as good as the "Dad's Army" ep!
