There are certainly no tanks at Oldbury the size of the ones in that clip; nor is there anything nearby the size of whatever (chimney stacks ?) you can see in the distance at 3m33, it's all countryside around Oldbury.

im sure that promo isnt Oldbury. If you google oldbury power station pictures you will see it looks nothing like what appears in that video.
Still a mystery then.

this site is bloody useless on a mobile phone bin trying to post 4 ages never mind it is clearly NOT Oldbury power station which is too close to the bristol channel and there's no sign of a motorway, in the promo we see a few white tanks I still say this is an oil refinery somewhere close to a motorway when this promo was first discovered it was thought to have been filmed at Almondsey also in bristol this was later ruled out as was spaghetti junction also I found another BBC blog that incorrectly said that it was a promo for gudbuy t jane that was filmed there. I will post further when I have found any info practically all of Slade's promo's were filmed down london way from the Ambrose Slade promo at Euston the coz i luv you at greenwich the look wot you done at chessington zoo the gudbuy t jane at the rainbow and even give us a goal at Brighton football club im away from home now until monday so will carry on when bak ome (pun intended)

This thread is particularly interesting to me as in the autumn of 1972 (as a 7 year old) I'd just started to watch TOTP (it had been there in the background ever since I could remember) but round about the time of Chuck Berry being at No 1 that autumn I'd started watching it religiously as I did until I was about 16 or 17 - I literally don't think I missed one in all that time!
Anyway to get back to the point one of my vague memories from this period is of Slade doing 'Gudbye To Jane' on the show and it being in the form of a film clip filmed in what seemed similar to something I'd also just seen on a recent John Pertwee 'Doctor Who' - they've sort of always been blurred together in my memory but I've subsequently never been able to work out why Slade were in such a setting too! Thought it was my memory playing tricks maybe but this thread confirms that no it really happened. For some reason I thought they (and that Dr Who series) were filmed at Jodrell Bank (which maybe I'd also seen on telly at the same time) but probably in retrospect it wasn't - I mean how would Slade have run around a radio telescope? (and in the clip they seemed to be running around gantries etc).
However what I can tell you now is that I know for certain Slade did appear in a promo clip on TOTP at the time of 'Goodbye To Jane' running around some kind of scientific/industrial site. And ps it looked nothing like that primitive 1971 clip of them in the car near the flats.

I am always driven to distraction trying to post to ANY PHP bulletin board on an Android phone. You can't click on ANYTHING without the position of everything on the screen running away from you and making you click somewhere else entirely! And the number of times it won't accept my password even though I KNOW I've typed it correctly (even using the autocomplete - sometimes works, sometimes doesn't). I think it's a fundamental ProBoards bug, not something related to this site in particular.

Could they possibly be the same? I think similar locations were also used later in other stories such as Claws Of Axos too but not being a location expert, I can't say for sure.

Southall Gas Works was regularly used as a location in the 70s - Sweeney, Professionals, Return of the Saint and possibly others. Ideally situated within reach of most London studios. And they didn't seem to mind actors running up the metal steps and along the gantry's, or cars speeding around.
Of the above links, the Bowie one certainly looked like it could be Southall.

seems a bit odd to me that Slade or Pans people would film at Oldbury as its not near London so not very convenient to take a TOTP film crew down there

It certainly looks like Southall Gas Works until they got on top of the gasometers. From what I've seen of the original site, they didn't have that many gasometers there and what they did have were a fairly wide diameter rather than the smaller ones seen here. That said, the date of the film would equate to when the site was being hired out extensively for film and television work.

Hi. I live only a few miles from Oldbury nuclear power station which is due to be decommissioned in 2012. One of its claims to fame is that Slade recorded a film on top of one of the reactors for Top of The Pops. It reminds me of Parys Mountain copper mine in Anglesey who claimed for years on their website that Doctor Who was filmed in the quarry. They always firmly said that Colony in Space was shot there in 1971 - until I pointed out to them that all the filming was done in Cornwall! ;D

Thats a great bit of information. I wonder if this video survives any where as it would have been an insert. I would love to see this video and I'm sure many people in my local area would (being in the shadow of Oldbury Power station)

Fasinating information here all around. Is sounding as are nearing the answer, know Gary will try his best in sleuthing any info on this material. If anyone can get to the bottom of this one, Gary can, very interested to hear what the scoop is there.
I bet that would deffinitely be of local interest in the area. As would hope with the masses as well!
KEEP ON ROCKIN'!
( If is the same Noizefeeler as on YT, fantastic account, some classic SLADE material there by the way )
Cheers, Lance.

Ahh, Have seen this clip many a time before. Very interesting if is indeed the mentioned TOTP insert-promo as listed above by Gary. Know we would all be interested to hear what gems Noddy may have in his private collection. Know the guys had purchased N1500 VCR's back in thier heyday ( Know Dave Hill did in particular). Know this lead has been researched in great detail in the past, nothing new there as far as I am aware? I wish that TopPop clip for "Mama Weer All Crazee Now"( 1972), would turn up again, was so very excited upon seeing that. and the "Thanks For The Memory" clip also from the same YT poster (1975, TopPop). Two items I never thought would have the privledge of viewing, and now, back into whichever collection it appeared from in Holland. The Search Goes On!! Was interested as well to read Nicadare's post in regards to the accidental TopPop wipings, something he had told me was false, a dead end. And now I hear the exact opposite, ha, knew I was correct on that one!
Thanks Gary for the indepth info, as always KEEP ON ROCKIN' my friend!
Cheers, Lance.
