Hi. I live only a few miles from Oldbury nuclear power station which is due to be decommissioned in 2012. One of its claims to fame is that Slade recorded a film on top of one of the reactors for Top of The Pops. Does anybody know what song this was, which year and whether the clip still exists.

Hi Bob. Although the video you posted a link too is industrial i dont think that is Oldbury power station. Gary. the story about Slade filming at Oldbury is often mentioned in the press in the West country. Below is a link to a BBC page that also mentions it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-13960986Its hard to ascertain if this is just an urban myth that keeps being perpetuated or whether it really happened. Nobody seems to have any further details other than this often repeated line 'Since its construction in the 1960s, Oldbury has starred in several television shows, including Doctor Who and Blakes 7, and even featured on Top Of The Pops when the group Slade recorded a performance for the show on the pile cap.' I have certainly never seen any footage of this

I worked at Oldbury for five years (when they filmed Dr Who there) and I don't recognise any of the Slade clip as being Oldbury - the large tanks are certainly wrong.
The Bowie clip might be (but then again may well not be).
I recall someone saying, years ago, that Pan's People did a dance routine on the pile cap at Oldbury.

Dunno about that - the guy who told me was called Bill, a colleague who worked in the 'Noise' section at Portishead Labs. AIR he said he was doing some measurements there at the time.

By Jonathan Calder, blogger, Liberal England:- ""The joy of blogging Earlier today I had an e-mail from the communications officer at Oldbury power station. She had come across my posting on Evel Knievel and through it the story of my participation in the 1977 British Monopoly championship, which was held at Oldbury. The station is soon to close and they are writing its history. It seems that I am a valuable source for this particluar episode. I am told that other highlights of the station's history include: the filming of a Doctor Who episode, featuring Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen; the filming of an episode of Blake's 7; Pan's People dancing to a Slade record on top of the pile cap for Top of the Pops.""

Interesting
"Pan's People dancing to a Slade record on top of the pile cap for Top of the Pops."
so its possible that Slade never made it to Oldbury but Pans People did.
If this is the case can anybody narrow it down to which Slade song it would have been. Also does this footage survive?

Well, Pan's People danced to Slade a few times - Skweeze Me Please Me, Coz I Love You and Get Down and Get With It for three; I have ruled out 1975's dance. Then again, I have read that the SECOND performance of Tap Turns on the Water (25/12/1971) featured a promo film of Pan's People dancing at a power station. So, we're still in the dark here.

Gaz is right, the public weren't allowed to drive on Spaghetti Junction until May 1972. The promo was screned 5th August 1971. Is it Oldbury?
