I had no idea there had been a Panoptican event in Brighton where I grew up, but then I would have been a little young. I certainly know the Duke of Yorks cinema though; it was where I first saw a movie on a big screen! All this talk of Brighton brings back another childhood memory. In Gardener Street in the North Lanes there used to be the 'Jubilee Shopping Mall', which was a real mish-mash of small, largely second-hand type retail outlets. In the basement, which included a unit called 'Jabba's Hut' that sold lots of second-hand toys from sci-fi and cult film and TV, there was one unit that was chock full of film cans. It wasn't a shop and there was never anyone there; it appeared to just be a storage dump. I always wondered what was in those cans and what became of them...

I always remember a well known fan of the time categorically stating that there were no more missing episodes to be found - ever! It was such a good feeling to prove him wrong - & to know that we had played a part in bringing back something that can now be enjoyed by DW fans all around the world Yes. It was David Howe. Since then, 12 episodes have turned up. Paul

I believe Paul said, not so long ago, that he thinks more are out there in private collections rather than TV stations (sorry if I'm paraphrasing)
I hope he's right but I'm less optimistic. If anything does turn up my guy says it'll be another episode of Galaxy 4 or Episode 1 or 2 of Marco Polo. Fingers crossed! Get down those car boot sales people!!

Well, I do think it less likely that episodes will turn up in foreign stations now. Private collectors in this country are more likely to hold the odd episode at this time. Paul

I think we also have to rely on the opportunism of (ex-) BBC employees to a certain extent, and it's unlikely that many of them will have had pockets that would fit more than a couple of film cans...

Possibly film collectors in New Zealand, Asia, and Africa too?

A bit off topic but Ive just watched The Power of the Daleks Re-Imagined on You Tube. Probably old news for most of you but in the unlikely event someone missed it when it came out last year like I did, its really good & well worth a look. For those of you who have already seen this, apologies!

I remember reading a mention of the Panopticon events in a DWAS publication - either the yearbook or CT but it was sometime after the event - which I will still have somewhere. It was only a brief mention by one of the Exec. as the article was an overview of the entire convention. My gut reaction was that these still missing at the time episodes may have slipped through the net due to being dismissed out of hand. For obvious reasons I can see no way the DWAS Exec. would have given approval for any individual to profit from the screening of copyright material but I would have thought the best thing to do would have been to play along initialy and ask for evidence that the prints existed before dismissing the offer. Of course this may have been done and the request rejected and it is easy to criticise from this distance. There were after all no shortage of hoaxes in those days - particularly at conventions. But I was at the time left with a feeling of a missed oportunity until thankfully those same prints turned up a couple of years later thanks to the efforts already noted in this thread.

I was almost certainly at that Panopticon as I went to at least one in Brighton. I'm not sure how many were held in Brighton. I recall seeing the Daemons, in colour, at a Panopticon in Brighton.

I had a sobering thought late last night. TV station returns have dried up, but missing episodes are being returned from collectors at a fairly steady rate, an average of one every four years since 1987. Yay! But if that continues, and I live to be ninety, I can only expect to see another five or so new-old Troughtons. Ulp! Perhaps I should try counting sheep instead.
