Richard Desmond has reportedly revealed that he wants to revive music show Top of the Pops. Wouldn't be the same, TOTP relies on chart music, today's chart music is made up mostly of manufactured bands who's members wouldn't know how to hold an instrument let alone play it. It would die a death within weeks.

Regardless on what happens regarding the "sale" of Channel 5, the BBC will not sell the rights to 'Top of the Pops' to them or indeed any other broadcaster.
There was a case, in October 1998, when the BBC announced that there would be no Christmas show that year (but subsequently there was!) and Simon Cowell then claimed that he had put in a bid for the show, with a view to resurrecting it on ITV. The BBC's position then, as now, is that "Top of the Pops is not for sale".
Although it's been gone since July 2006, the BBC still realise that there is some mileage left in the show, with the recent Christmas/New Years Eve and Comic Relief Specials pulling in reasonably good audiences. It is also too much of a famous "BBC brand" - hence why they won't sell the rights to the show.
However, reading the TOTP/Channel 5 story in full, that of course would not stop Channel 5 (or indeed any other broadcaster) in putting on a very similar weekly studio based music show. In fact, love it or loathe it, TOTP has left quite a gap in the terrestrial tv schedules, as currently, there is no where that you can see a weekly studio based chart music show.
Personally, I would like to see TOTP back weekly again on the BBC. However, I also live in the real world and know that this is very unlikely to happen! However, if another broadcaster, like 5, wanted to do a similar style show, I would welcome this and support it as personally, I feel that there IS still a market/audience out there for this type of show.....
I know not everyone will agree, but I really hope Channel 5 (or whoever!) bring back a similar TOTP style show - even if only on a temporary basis to "test the water" with it.
Time will tell.....

Today's music is rubbish anyway. Just enjoy the old totp shows! Well, to a certain extent, I would agree. However, there is still *some* good music in the charts - just as there has always been - TOTP simply reflects whats in the charts - good or bad. It's also a matter of personal taste of course. What's rubbish to some, is fantastic to others. Take some editions of TOTP from the mid-late seventies - to me personally, absolutely dire! (even though I am a huge TOTP fan) - I would find it hard going to sit through any editions from 76-79 - not a personal favourite of mine! But there you go - just my opinion - to others, they would really enjoy this!

I personally liked 76-79 totp but didn't like punk era. What spoilt 76-78 in my opinion was the miming ban, if these shows would have been purely mimed they would've been awesome!

With the launch of BBC One HD this year I'd love to see a TOTP HD kicking off their Saturday night line up And why not a year by year DVD release of the show (admittedly a single set for the first decade, for obvious reasons ) If it can be done with Musik Laden . .

Didn't Channel 5 make its own version some time ago? Yes, they did The Pepsi Chart, which ran for several years - it began in 1998 and ran until, I think, about 2003. It was even on Thursdays at 7pm for a bit. But it never really caught on because apart from a handful of decent bookings - the post-Geri Spice Girls were on it once - there would only be about one or two middling live acts and then a load of videos. Channel Five were also planning to revive CDUK when ITV axed it - only three months before Top of the Pops itself, as it happens - but that idea went for a burton when Blaze, the production company, went bust. Meanwhile ITV's planned replacement for CDUK was abandoned as they couldn't find a sponsor. But while Channel Five would never be able to show Top of the Pops because, yes, the BBC still own the brand and still make it, there's absolutely nothing to stop them doing a show with exactly the same format as they did indeed do with The Pepsi Chart. And I for one would welcome it because if you're a pop band now, your only outlets now are the likes of Blue Peter and the interval during the voting on Strictly, so it's either kids telly or variety. What is this, the sixties?

I am amazed that no other broadcaster has picked up on the fact that there *is* still a market for a weekly studio based pop show.... TOTP has left a huge gap......
I know that people will say that single sales aren't what they were/charts/music these days are rubbish - fair enough - but - since downloads have really picked up from CD sales, chart figures perhaps have a little more relevance than they did, say when TOTP ended in 2006....
Personally, I don't think all of today's music is rubbish. I'm the ripe old age of 40 this year and I still try and follow the charts - not as closely or religiously as I once did of course, but I am still interested. There *is* still some good music in the charts (well in my opinion anyway!) as well as the crap - but surely that's the way it's always been?
Music is, alot of the time, down to personal taste - what's rubbish to some will be fantastic to others. I can remember watching many, many editions of TOTP not liking quite a few of the artists/groups on the programme - even on all the recordings I went to!
Hence why i think there is a gap here to be filled. I really miss TOTP. Ok, we can all get our music fix via video's on "You Tube" or satellite video music channels, but this isn't the same as seeing a new, studio based performance on a weekly basis....
I hope Channel 5 do bring a "TOTP type" show back - I, for one, would support it, as I know would many others..... I'd rather have my beloved TOTP back, but somehow I don't think this is going to happen.....got more chance of the BBC suddenly finding a complete archive of every single 60's/70's editions somewhere than this happening!!!!
