A nice little index, Pete. Presumably though the Sweet Dream clip could be either from 6/11/69 or 13/11/69? There's no way of telling conclusively which one it is.

Very interesting list of Tull performances from the BBC archives but I seem to remember from the TOTP database that used to be on the BBC website (whatever happened to that?) that Tull performed Sweet Dream once at the BBC Lime Grove studios for TOTP and the second showing was a repeat performance - I could be mistaken though and Tull's touring schedule on the website www.ministry-of-information.co.uk/setlist/69c.htm show's Tull's first appearance with Sweet Dream as 30/10/1969 with a return visit on 13/11/1969. Not sure how accurate this is though and anyway any performance could have been taped well in advance of the broadcast date. For those interested, here's a still of Tull's TOTP performance of 'Living In The Past' from June '69 (I have a better shot somewhere but can't find it at the moment) - www.cornick.org/gallery/jethro_tull_archive_1/gc311?full=1Regarding the OGWT appearances - some years ago Record Collector mag ran an article on the show and the shows featuring Tull survive. The 1975 performance live from the Paris Olympia 5/7/75 was filmed and recorded by Chrysalis Records for a possible 'video disk' release which never materialized. 70 mins still exists in an EMI vault apparently. The 1976 appearance ( I think) is an interview with Ian Anderson by Bob Harris in which Anderson refers to Whispering Bob as 'Bomber Harris' and presents him with a flying helmet and goggles. Never seen this though and I've no idea what was shown in the "Skating Away..." clip. Does anyone know? There's another Anderson interview from OGWT in late September or early October 1978 just before the MSG concert which is not on the list - this exists and I have a copy on VHS somewhere. Finally the Madison Square Garden show from 1978 has very recently been released on DVD with an expanded soundtrack

Some interesting facts there, Don. Thanks. According to BBC records though, the 13/11/69 Tull appearance was a new one and not a repeat of the week before. So it's open to question which of these it is that's turned up.
One thing: is the '75 show filmed for video disk the earliest actual complete Tull concert (or large part thereof) in existence that was shot or were there earlier ones?

There is from Tanglewood Lenox, Ma. USA 7th July 1970 a rare Pro-Shot Multi Camera Footage approx. 76 min, incomplete (available). Also the Stockholm 9th January 1969 full set is in the vaults (unreleased).

Yes, the Tanglewood footage was a great surprise when that turned up on the collector's circuit about 10 years ago. I managed to track down the chap who had actually recorded it in 1970 - Joshua White, who used to put on the famous light shows for Bill Graham at the Filmore East to accompany the bands that played there. He was very forthcoming with his recollections of the Tanglewood show where he video taped (on 2" NTSC Colour Quad) performances by The Who, It's A Beautiful Day and Jethro Tull primarily to relay to large video screens for the audience outside the venue but he also set up extra cameras to take some wider shots of the bands and the audience too to create a better presentation for possible TV use. Sound was recorded on 8 track and some of The Who's set has appeared on official DVDs over the last few years but nothing of Tull......yet. Joshua was almost certain that the master tapes are still held in the Bill Graham archives and there's a very good chance that this will appear very soon on www.wolfgangsvault.com in pristine quality which has just started to release some of it's video archive for download. There is an earlier video'ed (not filmed) Tull show in existence from the Filmore East in December 1969. This was shot from above and to the side of the stage on 1/2" b/w video (some sort of early domestic/semi-pro format I think) with sound taken directly from the mixing desk. Bill Graham used to record many bands at the Filmore East in this way and, again, we may see some of these appearing via the wolfgang's vault website. But the Tull footage is still in the possession of the chap who recorded it and the producers of the recent 'Jethro Tull Story' DVD tried to buy it for inclusion on the DVD but the asking price was too high. Some reasonably good quality clips of this footage can be seen on good old YouTube (ignore the title, these are definitely from Filmore East, New York - 5th or 6th December 1969): www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm0XT2cqzLIwww.youtube.com/watch?v=4OpQZJwC9fM

Is the Wolfgang's site worth subscribing to, Don? I signed up for the newsletter and get monthly bulletins but a lot of the groups offered are too recent for my taste. Sixties and early seventies are the time of the groups I want to see. I'm not sure how the site operates. Do you get full concerts and is quality good? Might help me make a decision about joining.
I'm ever interested in a bit of early Tull so good news of these early gig recordings. I've seen bits of Tanglewood but didn't know about Stockholm 1969, John. Is it a film or video and colour or black and white? Tull seem well represented in the archives aside from those missing Top Of The Pops.
Anyone remember the tv ad for Passion Play about 1973 with the ballerina? Were any of the concerts for this album filmed?
Dave

Hi Dave, www.wolfgangsvault.com is definitely worth subscribing to, yes. You can play back most if not all of the audio content for free as a data stream over the net. I get 2 e-mail each week with their new releases. The mid-week mail is mostly older stuff (60s/70s) and the weekend mail newer bands but if you go to the concert vault on the site there are hundreds of concerts from the 60s/70s but audio recordings only at the moment. BTW - the Passion Play advert still exists on film at the BFI. Sadly no shows from this tour were professionally filmed or recorded but a few 8mm clips are available on youtube.

Re. Wolfgang's Vault - quality is generally excellent with most of the archive being professionally recorded either for radio broadcast or from the soundboard as part of Bill Graham's private collection.

Any Barrett-era Floyd turned up on Wolfgang yet, Don, by any chance? I know it's been rumoured for ages that Graham may well have recorded a 1967 show of theirs.

Re. Pink Floyd - nothing from 1967 yet but they do have a full 1970 concert from San Francisco. Bill Graham did record a huge number of shows of the artists he promoted so if it's rumoured then there's a very good chance it's true.
By the way , back on to Tull, the BBC do still have audio recording of all 3 of Tull's early TOTP appearances - Living In The Past, Sweet Dream and Witch's Promise. These are original studio backing tracks with new (live?) vocals and any string arrangements mixed out or very low. I guess this was done to get around the musicians union ban on miming.
These are sometimes mistaken as Peel Session tracks but they are clearly labeled as TOTP recordings on a BBC session spreadsheet I've seen.

Thanks for that. These three Jethro Tull tracks wouldn't actually be sessions for the Brain Matthew radio show called Top Of The Pops, would they, Don? A lot of people mix this up with the TV show so it's easily done. Just a thought.

Totally amazed the PP advert exists but pleased all the same. I was thinking that Wolfgang was also video clips. It's still very intersting all the same. I might take the plunge sooner or later. Do they plan to add video later? Assuming they filmed groups in the first place. Dave

Dave - Bill Graham did video a number of shows at the Filmore East in b/w like the Tull one I mentioned so these may start to appear soon - keep an eye on the website. Laurence - the 3 Tull tracks are definitely TOTP soundtracks - here is a link to the BBC Session and In Concert catalogue which effectively is their full archive holdings (download-able as a spreadsheet) - www.bbcradioint.com/BBCSessions.aspxTull did appear on some Brian Matthews 'Top of the Pops' transcription records for foreign broadcast but they used John Peel Top Gear session tracks with Matthews talking over the top of them
