Yep - it appears that Steeleye Span appeared as the Wombles for one or both Superwomble appearances.

If that's not Chris Spedding doing the Chuck Berry-style lead guitar solo on "Superwomble", then, um, it's somebody else...
I don't remember "Banana Rock" on TOTP ever, at all.

I was working on a Womble project for awhile but do remember that The Rubettes drummer did appear as a Womble on occasion which seemed to be confirmed by the drumming Womble concerned do a trick with the sticks that was the same as seen with the drummer in the Rubettes...
Robin Le Mesurier was a Womble on stage and I believe was the only Womble to be sacked as he was found embibing a herbal sequence off-stage at a gig - allegedly!

I don't remember "Banana Rock" on TOTP ever, at all. Probably because its chart run coincided with the TOTP industrial dispute?

Did the Wombles perform Banana Rock on any other show in the UK? I think I can remember seeing it on something, but the memory does play tricks. I remember my parents went on (and on) about flogging a dead horse, but that could have been Super Womble.

Jayadev John Richardson; the twirling-sticks drummer of the Rubettes (ex Barry Blue and Lynsey de Paul amongst others) revealed to me that he appeared as Madame Cholet on one TOTP....

"Post by markjhaley on Nov 15, 2009 at 4:39pm I can confirm John Richardson (drummer with the Rubettes) got roped in to drum on 'Wombling Merry Xmas'. He used to spin the drum sticks in his hand and said it was difficult with Womble gloves on. It was also very hot in the suit (no big secret there)"

I remember from my Dad's 1980 Guinness Hits Singles book the Wombles had more weeks on the charts that any other act in 1974.

Funny times, like how in 1975 Bill Oddie won some award for the most hit songs in 1975, although he had no other hits outside that narrow frame of reference.

Another Hits Singles books has a reprint of a poster from The Royal Guardsmen thanking fans for a successful 1967, though they had only 2 hits in this year & nothing thw years either side, at least in the UK.
