It's common knowledge that Chris Spedding was a Womble On TOTP & I've also read that David Essex and Paul 'n Linda were. Can anyone confirm the aforementioned and anyone one else from the day that dressed as a Womble for the show?
Thank you.

I can confirm John Richardson (drummer with the Rubettes) got roped in to drum on 'Wombling Merry Xmas'. He used to spin the drum sticks in his hand and said it was difficult with Womble gloves on. It was also very hot in the suit (no big secret there).I don't know if it was from a Xmas edition which the band were on or an earlier show ('Juke Box Jive' was in the Top 3 December 74) but Mike Batt routinely persuaded other acts on the show to dep' for the likes of Clem Cattini (Tornados, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates drummer) and Chris Spedding who actually played on the records
Also on the Xmas 74 show, the Rubes' did the 'I Don't Think So' bit during David Essex's 'Gonna Make You Star'.

An easier way to find out who may have been a Womble on TOTP would be to sort out if the artiste you think MAY have worn a Womble costume was appearing on that show! So has anyone got dates of Wombles' appearances? (I seem to recall Wellington being left handed on one occasion, I think this was from a photo purporting to be from a TOTP; for those of you unable to recall, Wellington wore glasses and a cap, and I think played lead guitar....).

Having looked at Pete Seaton's Poptastic, it appears that the Wombles Minuetto Allegretto was going down the charts when Macca and the rest of Wings would have been taping Junior's Farm....so I guess they did not appear as the Wombles. I haven't got the list of artistes appearing on that November 74 show, but Essex was at number one.

Those are sound, logical points you're making Ray. One other possibility though. It wasn't unusual for artistes to be filmed 'ahead of schedule' so to speak.
Certainly the BBC could reasonably expect a Paul McCartney/Wings record to chart so they may well have filmed him on an earlier occasion when he was available.
By the way, I'm pretty sure that Steeleye Span were Wombles for a day and Chris Speeding is easily recognised by his Flying V guitar

The search continues to see which famous musicians were underground overground wombling free. Perhaps a list of the Wombles appearances on TOTP would be a good idea? Mr Seaton, is it possible for you to do the honours here?

(deep breath)
Having done an extensive search of Pete Seaton's fantastic Poptastic site, both David Essex and the Rubettes appeared on the same edition of the Wombles on three occasions each (Rubettes 25/4/74, 9/5/74 and 5/12/74; Essex 4/10/74, 19/12/74 and 18/12/75). McCartney/Wings and Steeleye Span did not feature on the same episodes as the Wombles, although inserts may have been filmed previously - bear in mind people forget that Steeleye Span had the same producer, Mike Batt.... I guess the only way we'll know is if we ask the performers themselves. Essex lives in the US now, McCartney lives near Rye, and Maddy lives in Bewcastle....feel free to write to them!
I did used to be friends with Mike Batt's daughter Sam, but I don't think me getting back in touch and asking her 'scuse me, can you ask your dad if he recalls what date that David Essex/Paul McCartney/the Rubettes/Steeleye Span/ (insert 70's Group name such as Limmie and the Family Cookin) appeared on Top of the Pops' is going to be a question I get answered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nevertheless, any suggestions are welcome!
