I was shocked to find so few early Who performances exist in the bbc archive - i especially remember a fantastic performance of Magic Bus from How It Is and Why. Does anyone know a definitive list of what exist or what clips are out there in private hands?

i was only thinking of their heyday in the 60s and early 70s - not their whole career!

There are a bunch of clips: shindig!-survived, French tv 1967-15m live-survive, Stockholm 1967-raw concert footage and interviews, 10m-survive, Monterey pop festival concert- 1967 survives in entirety, various Beat club 1967-69 survive in entirety, Woodstock raw footage about 60m, Popside tv special 30m-survive, French tv 1967 in color-survives in entirety, Kilburn theatre 9/67 a few minutes of raw footage rumored to exist, a few minutes of color raw footage rumored to exist from 1967 summer tour in US with Hermans Hermits (Hermans Hermits raw footage of at least 1 song at same venue does exist), Pop Goes the 60s survives, Tanglewood,Lenox, MA survives in entirety and owned by Bill Graham Productions.
Recently color footage from outdoor concert in France and short interview has come to light from 1972 tour. Also a concert which was previously held by only 2-3 collectors from Houston Texas in 1974 is making its rounds on ebay.
Also Call me lightning promo, happy jack and a few others, Pictures of Lilly recording session footage, and Bucket T footage exist.
Hope this helps. If I can think of anything else I will post.

The French tv footage is color and it has 2 songs- Magic Bus and Happy Jack. Actually, I think it is 1968. I have 2 versions-2 songs complete in lousy condition, and one 2nd gen super vhs pristine version of happy jack.
Looks like color film-real nice.

SM,
I guess my kids are destroying my once reliable memory. Thanks for the clarification on the Who's French tv. My error.
I do have that complete rebroadcast, albeit fair quality (actually picture is ok but sound is horrible). Do you have complete broadcast, quality, format, etc? E-mail me at stuber34@yahoo.com

I alwasy thought it was contemporary, but you could be right. It's black and white, with footage of the very early Who in a club and Daltrey singing the song, intercut with Mods dancing.

Yes there is: you cna see it in the "Kids are alright" film. with of the very earliest videos from the dawn of the days when the britpop acts of the day started making proper promo vids: Rolling Stone "have you seen your mother", Kinks "Dead End Street", Beatles "Penny Lane" etc.
