First reports that I hear suggest it's film, so it may be "just" a telerecording. I’m assuming black & white? Most likely. Thankfully, we have the Chroma Dot Colour Recovery process to restore the missing color.

Incredible news! Makes you wonder if the original VT’s of the series have been sat in the ITV archive all along. Perhaps. Sometimes the most unique rediscoveries of missing episodes are the ones you lease expect it.

Having watched the first episode and dipped into others these are telerecordings and not VT. Also they were originally produced in black and white so there can’t be any colour recovery.

I was the one that was able to identify the 16mm B&W telerecording that came back to LWT in the 1990s - it was indeed from Hong Kong TV who were sent a single episode to see if they wanted to buy it, so an audition reel as it were. It was awhile back but I think it was the 'new' ep 1 compiled from the old eps 1 & 2. Fascinated to hear where these new versions came from though! I was told back then they were only sent the one ep, but if they found the rest of the series over there...

They were apparently at ITV all the time, just mislaid: 'ITV told British Comedy Guide today: "It was found by the ITV Archive team as part of a huge project to fully identify every archive asset ITV holds. "The series had been sitting in the ITV vaults though mis-catalogued for decades, but through the identification programme we were able to make this remarkable find. "We flagged it to our colleagues in streaming, had the film cleaned and restored from the 16mm telerecordings and then finally made available to our viewers for the first time since the original broadcasts.'

Excellent. This sort of recovery gives us all hope for future ITV archive discoveries.

How many more hidden gems are there in the ITV archives that have been mis-catalogued

How many more hidden gems are there in the ITV archives that have been mis-catalogued Who knows, but I would't get too hopeful. It's not like a Doctor Who, Dad's Army, or Z-Cars missing episode would show up there or something.

It's not like a Doctor Who, Dad's Army, or Z-Cars missing episode would show up there or something. Network wouldd regularly announce the release of ITV shows/series listed as missing. Unlike the BBC, ITV seem not to have shared their commercial info with Kal. ...At least, that was what I heard. Obviously, there are also examples of mis-cataloguing. Wasn't a Who camera-negative (or whatever) discovered in their archive mislabeled as an audio? (Sure I've got the details wrong).

I wonder if this archive-trawl is related to the upcoming Leicester 'Search Your Drawers' event?

I've gone back and thanked Gary's original post. (I didn't quite believe it could be true at the time).
Typically, this makes another historic DVD release of a UK comedy show-in this case Network's The New Incomplete Complete & Utter History Of Britain Blu-ray DVD Set-incomplete. Great!

I wonder if this archive-trawl is related to the upcoming Leicester 'Search Your Drawers' event? It isn't. But I like your alternative title.

I’m assuming black & white? Most likely. Thankfully, we have the Chroma Dot Colour Recovery process to restore the missing color. What are you guys talking about, it was always b/w. Check the network DVD/BR set: the existing episodes, CV2000, VT, telerecordings and filmed inserts, are all b/w.

I was refering to the Chroma Dot Colour Recovery process, which can restore the missing colour to the Black and White prints. It's been used in episodes of Doctor Who, Dad's Army, Steptoe and Son, & Morecambe and Wise.
