To be perfectly honest an episode of Monty Pyhton I watched the other day featutred a character called Mrs N***erbater. Now that's a vile archaic term, by virtually any standard, and had limited comedy value, even at the time. I'd have no problem if that were cut, or the name of the character muted because it shows the actors and producers of that episode in a most unedifying light, and would probably be in favour of the cut themselves if they had access to the material. Standards have changed, and if that means a few cuts to stuff so those old attitudes can't be projected onto the next generation? Well, good. Well, she does explode, comeuppance right there. Plus, as a compromise, better shown edited than not shown at all, one would say, right? But in the larger scheme of things these kind of arguments won't matter to the complainers, probably because it's symbolic for a larger issue. At least, I suspect that deep down, this is always about people unwilling to accept a negative verdict on an aspect of how they used to live. When I was young, 'Allo 'Allo was really ubiquitous for a while. I suppose that if that was being judged, I'd be a bit like "What? EVERYONE watched that, and we turned out fine, it didn't us into queerbashers or anything, so what's the problem?". So maybe that is how it works, and why the very suggestion is such a red rag for some? Nevertheless I really hope that when I'm even older, that I won't start crowbarring the matter into all sorts of unrelated discussions, using unfounded claims to support my own fears and uncertainties. We all know that the past wasn't perfect, and neither is the present, as a matter of fact.

I forgot Mrs N exploded... "she was my best friend" Remembering that bit of the sketch did gave me cause to chuckle this morning. In the interests of steering discussion back on topic; Is any one aware of any cuts made to this recently recovered episode? I am halfway through writing a review of this episode for my audio book blog, so if anyone is aware of any and would care to share the information, then I will happily include any factual details in my review.

I almost agree - I do think that it's probably right to remove something that is by any definition offensive in present times - but there should be an obligation to retain the original uncensored version with access to it - for the sake of historical accuracy. It would be unfair to deny a researcher in years to come the chance to see what was removed later - to better understand how exactly times have changed. If we were only left with the sanitised version then surely we'd be re-writing history and brushing the truth under the rug? People wouldn't realise just how racist society was back then - they'd think it was all clean and inoffensive, which it really wasn't.

I listened to the Radio 4 documentary about this. Why does everything have to be done in this lame jokey style? Also various people seemed to have been primed to say that discovering a Hancock was the gold standard and then, surprise, there was one. Which seemed contrived. We're grown ups and can handle serious programmes.
Great that it has been found though.

Many thanks to Richard and Keith for supplying this long lost gem. Would be nice if the new intro was redone with someone who sounds like a 1950s Adrian Waller (and why was his first line missing?). The show seemed a bit short - I hope nothing was cut from the new repeat. I don't know why the good Sid James gag "They found a bride for Frankenstein - shouldn't be too much harder to find one for you" was omitted. I thought Sellers did a great job with his Yorkshireman employer & Crystal Jollibottom as Granny...

But then him playing a Crystal Jollibottom might not have gone down too well, whereas for Sellers it was perfect.
