Great news re the find....!
funny I was only thinking about Alf the other day back on 30 July when watching that 1966 World Cup documentary ITV screened re what everybody was doing that day (while BBC screened nothing on the anniversary day itself)
in the film 'Till Death Us Do Part' Alf and Mike go to watch the final
Alf says at the end; 'Just like the War started off all right...got bleedin' clobbered in the end...!'
An angry German fan reacts; 'I not stay here see Germany beaten...!!' Alf's reply is; 'Well p*** off then...!'
they stumble home next day at dawn in a drunken stupor.... an irate Elsie asks; 'where have you two been...?' Alf answers; 'There was Extra Time...'
Modern 'correct' BBC execs would no doubt have a heart attack at the distasteful racist/sexist/everythingist stuff their predecessors churned out...to 18 million viewers in the sixties and seventies, so a future DVD release is probably the only chance the wider public will ever get to enjoy this superbly written funny sitcom ever again...

Roobarb says that a clip from Intolerance was shown in the Alf Garnet featurette screened after tonight's modern rendition of TDUDP. Yes it was credited as being from Intolerance though I've seen something like it from well before this episode was recovered - the son-in-law asks Alf how he'd like it if somebody called him a certain derogatory term beginning with Y for a person of Jewish ancestry. But I remember watching something similar where the scene extends to a lengthy discussion of Garnett's supposed relations and his hysterical apoplexy at being "accused" of such heritage (and I never worked out if this was just a wind-up by Tony Booth's character). Did the clip I'm thinking of always exist or was the dialogue re-used in a colour episode? Oh and another brief clip was shown from State Visit as well.

I seem to remember something about his eating bacon? Did he deny being Jewish in an episode,or one of the films? I've seen it somewhere and was under the impression that AG is/was Jewish.

Else always maintained that Alf's dad was Jewish (although once she said something like "Nobody really knew what he was"). Alf said he liked a nice bit of ham in a scene with Roy Kinnear. And clearly he approves on Jesus on repeated occasions so, on balance, yes Jewish origin, but Christian (in a very broad sense) by choice.

The discussion between Alf and Mike about Alf's Jewishness I recall as being in a black and white episode although there may have been a similar chat in colour. The very nature of the series was arguments were repeated in different episodes - a reflection of real life.

I remember seeing a clip of this sometime. I did wonder if it was a reflection of Warren Mitchell being Jewish in real life.

There's a fleeting reference to Alf's father being Jewish in the first thirty seconds of this great clip, along with Alf's own view of Jesus.

"The discussion between Alf and Mike about Alf's Jewishness I recall as being in a black and white episode"
I believe you're referring to a scene from the 1965 pilot episode. Only part of this exists - and then only because it was repeated on "Points Of View" or a similar programme.

Given that Intolerance is being shown at the MBW event, I am assuming that it is that episode which has been found as opposed to Football. Or have I got that wrong?

Hey, hadn't realized, good question! Ah wait no they said this a while ago, it contained a bit of football so initially they misidentified it. But it was intolerance all along.

Yes - a 10-min chunk existed from "Intolerance" before the recent find. Most of the other orphan clips from TDUDP are from a 1972 (IIRC) "Late Night Line Up" interview with Speight. Not sure anybody has gone thru it to see where they come from, but there are certainly clips in that which have not traditionally been in the BBC library (I'm not including all the 1/2-inch finds of recent years). A DVD collection bringing together all the extant 60s stuff would be a good idea, but it would need somebody good as producer to ensure that bits weren't overlooked as it's a pretty messy situation.

The Missing Episodes Index on the main page has already been updated following the discovery of Intolerance. It also notes the orphaned clips from the Late Night Line Up show:
Sex Before Marriage (the decorating clip) A Wapping Mythology (Duke of Windsor picture) Aunt Maud (the God/pestilence clip)
According to Wikipedia, there is a sequence existing from The Bulldog Breed but the source is not mentioned.
A DVD collection of the 60's material would contain 11 episodes. A far better state of affairs now compared with the mid 90's when I believe only A House with Love In It and The Blood Donor existed in the archives.
