I'm coping some VHS tapes to DVD tonight and one of them is an episode of Nationwide from December 1980 on the day John Lennon was shot. The whole show was devoted to this.
They showed various archive clips of John, one of which was a few seconds of a live performance of "I Feel Fine". The on screen caption said "Top of the pops, December 1964"
Ringo was badly miming which is what makes me think it was a live performance rather than the video.
Was the caption wrong? Or is it a clip which is now wiped?
Out of interest, Nationwide's entry from Lost Shows.
09.12.80 Lennon Tribute Programme The only known complete copy was recorded on a domestic video format (e.g. VHS, Beta, Philips 1500).

I found that clip and wanted to link to it here.
Do you know if it was the actual TOTP performance?

I found that clip and wanted to link to it here. Do you know if it was the actual TOTP performance? Matt, I'm thinking it won't be the TOTP appearance - it'll be one of the Intertel I Feel Fine films (actually from 1965, not 1964, shown for the Xmas edition of TOTP). I could tell you for certain if I could see the portion of Nationwide on youtube (which I realize isn't your fault!). If any one could send me a copy of this Nationwide edition, I could ascertain where the clip is from.

It was from the Christmas '65 edition of Top Of The Pops. I actually saw a copy of the entire show at the ICA in 1986 - and presume the copy came from the BFI - is it still there?

I remember seeing the Nationwide thing at the time. George's punchbag mic and Ringo's exercise bike stuck in the mind. I found out much later it was from the Intertel session. A friend recalls them being on TOTP with George miming "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" into his mic while the song was something else. On the promo, George isn't singing I feel Fine, so I'm wondering if that was a semi false memory.

You're right about the exercise bike and George singing the wrong song. I'll see if I can get my copy onto Youtube.

I used to have a Sony Betamax 750 tape starting with the Help film, bbc xmas continuity, the nationwide tribute and the tape ended with BBC news (Angela Rippon) I copied the whole tape to dvd, which had been left running from start to finish without any pauses, stops etc...

I taped a lot of John Lennon stuff that night and I don't recall any early TOTP clip, just what we now refer to, as the Intertel promos. I catologued my tapes in the late eighties and there was nothing new or unusually rare from what we've already seen. I the only rare clip was not even The Beatles, it was The Police! An alternate promo for "Don't Stand So Close To Me" filmed on the same day they filmed "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da"

From the wonderful Keith Badman, noted author, Beatles expert and pop culture historian:-
"" Hi Ray,
Hoping all is well, mate.
I would like to answer one of the current queries on the Missing Episodes board.
I can confirm, without any doubts whatsoever that The Beatles' performance of 'I Feel Fine', supposedly from "Top Of The Pops, December 1964", as screened on the John Lennon BBC1 Nationwide tribute show in December 1980, was nothing more than the regular, often screened, now officially released InterTel promo clip from November 1965. (George - Punch Bag / Ringo - exercise bike etc. ) Hope that helps.
Keep up the great work, Ray.
Best Wishes, Keith ""
My suspicions were correct, but more to the point, Keith has had access to BBC Archives in the past and will know!
