'09.12.80 Lennon Tribute Programme. The only known complete copy was recorded on a domestic video format (e.g. VHS, Beta, Philips 1500).' Yep, that's my copy that I gave to Christine Slattery at the BBC Film & VT Library many years ago. I recorded it on a Philips 1502 machine. I used to work with Christine before she moved to Brentford and have always kept in touch with her. When I found out that there wasn't an off-air recording of this programme, but I still had my tape I gave it to her.

Strangely enough I had an email to say it had been blocked before I had an email to say it had finished uploading!

I remember on Nationwide, Hugh Scully was talking to, I think, Alan Price and he said "John Lennon was a very good 'Lead Guitarist'" (with Lead Guitarist very in quotation marks, the sort placed by people who don't really know what they're talking about but are obliged to talk about it anyway).
Alan Price, knowing that whatever else John Lennon was, he was not a particularly good guitarist of any description, looked immensely puzzled and said, "He was a good player, yes" and left it at that.

He wasn't even the best "Guitarist" in The Beatles

Nice to know this has survived there would have been another copy in existence if I hadn't accidentally wiped it from my Dads off air VHS copy as a clumsy 15 year old. He labelled the tape as well when he found out I had accidentally wiped it he went ballistic understandably so.

From the wonderful Keith Badman, noted author, Beatles expert and pop culture historian:- "" Hi Ray, Hoping all is well, mate. I would like to answer one of the current queries on the Missing Episodes board. I can confirm, without any doubts whatsoever that The Beatles' performance of 'I Feel Fine', supposedly from "Top Of The Pops, December 1964", as screened on the John Lennon BBC1 Nationwide tribute show in December 1980, was nothing more than the regular, often screened, now officially released InterTel promo clip from November 1965. (George - Punch Bag / Ringo - exercise bike etc. ) Hope that helps. Keep up the great work, Ray. Best Wishes, Keith "" My suspicions were correct, but more to the point, Keith has had access to BBC Archives in the past and will know! After ten years of speaking to each other via email - I finally met Keith Badman at the BFI for MBW 22/07/2017....

For the benefit of those of us unable to attend the MBW, could you provide a quick summary of the day! What was the most interesting footage?

On this slightly morbid subject. That particular morning my father socially aware me before 08.00 with cup of tea and the terrible news that John Lennon had been shot and died. At that time I slept next to my open reel recorder which was directly connected to a radio and TV. Shocked I immediately turned the radio on and began recording to catch News and subsequent reaction. Using an electronic timer I recorded various Lennon items through out the day mainly audios from the TV. I think I have the soundtrack to Nationwide amongst other progs. Alas I found the whole event very distressing so I have never listened to the tape. I still have it. may be after all this time I should try and play it again. Does any one know if anything "important" in missing terms I should be looking for? I know I am not alone in saying that grief filled day robbed all of us of our childhoods. A truly great man was gone. the dream was over.

Just last year I decided to go thru the tapes, and certainly find them very depressing, but it's not as bad as it felt back then. My understanding is that most of the US & UK tributes do survive on video, and if they don't survive at the TV stations, many fans have them. All the best, Robert

Me too - I recorded everything and anything that day on a cassette! In some way it was all I felt I could do. I really have no desire to revisit them, but a huge line was drawn across my life that day.
