So, Ray, you emailed a Dooley, and the Dooley in turn didn't reply. I bet THAT made you feel wanted, not being one of the chosen few, but it's great you didn't take it lyin' down ...

What's the right verb here? Stood up by the Dooleys? Blanked by the Dooleys?
(Terry Wogan voice: "I was doing some music research one night when I was blanked by the Dooleys. I was blanked by the Dooleys. Lorraine - ah, dear Lorraine - what's your answer?")
I've actually been doing that "grabbed by The Dooleys" joke for years so I'm quite pleased it was cut. I'd hate anyone to think I was knowingly doing Russ Abbot's material. Although I daresay the feeling's mutual.

I noticed at the end of this weeks show some of the audience were wearing 'EMI records' t-shirts. Does anyone out there if any of the audience members on the show during its 42 year run were mostly working in the music & TV industry as well as the public?

You would get a smattering of industry 'insiders' treading the boards on TOTP - hence the three Danny Baker cameos we know of in 1979 (the first being part of the Blockheads entourage on 18-1-79), Eric Hall was there a lot too - but on some occasions the audience would be the benefactors of PR with free T-shirts, badges etc

will they show any editions with richard skinner? if not,did he ask the BBC not to show it or what? i recall when UK gold repeated the 70s editions in the mid 90s they never showed any editions with noel edmonds & UK gold said he did'nt want them to show any of his shows at the time when he relaunched his career when he did his 'HOUSE PARTY'. what was the reason?

TV Cream hasn't pointed out that the Richard Skinner ones have been skipped, though recent ones been mostly Tommy Vance, Peter Powell & Mike Reid presenting.

I'm sure the two recent Skinner editions were 'skipped' because he co-hosted with Jimmy Savile. However, I can't see any reason why the 11/12/80 (post-Lennon) edition won't be broadcast as he appears to be hosting this TOTP on his own.

They are not banned, 6-11-1980 wasn't shown as it was co-hosted by Savile. Here are the remaining scheduled shows for 1980.
26th November 7.30pm: 04-11-1980: Peter Powell 3rd December 7.30pm: 11-12-1980: Richard Skinner 10th December 7.30pm: 18-12-1980: Simon Bates
Nothing scheduled yet for over the Christmas period.

I assume Richard Skinner was not too well-known to the wider audience, hence to phase him in his first shows were with Jimmy Savile.

Talking of Jona Lewie, in researching a possible answer to the above question, I came across this on Jona Lewie's website. He's talking about Seaside Shuffle ... His reasons for tape wiping look interesting. Comment, anyone? “Ironically all three separate original performances of “Seaside Shuffle” on the BBC TV’s flagship weekly chart programme “Top Of The Pops” got destroyed — an inexperienced BBC tape operator had been erasing original performances from the master tape for some 8 months thinking he was doing the BBC a favour by saving on tape costs which were very expensive in those days. It is virtually certain that no known copy exists today. He was promptly fired when the BBC found out!” “However the follow up to the track in early 1973 was “On A Saturday Night” and a performance of it on a German TV music show survives.” EDIT: This blog states it was John Otway on tuba in the backing band. yesitsnumberone.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/alternative-totp-christmas-canon.html

I haven't watched it yet and it's been a while since I watched my UK Gold copy but I imagine the band includes other Stiff artists like Kirsty McColl [she appeared with him when he did "Kitchens..."]
