The Michael Troughton conversation on the extra audio for episode 1 was one of the best "commentarys" I've heard in the classic Who DVD range. He really conveyed, in part from the warmth of his tone - Patrick Troughton's great likeability & presence despite the ( very human ) problematic nature of some of his private life for some of those close to him.
DVDs are far better than downloads - for all the reasons mentioned. And also that nice feeling that you have a sort of library. When I was young books & libraries were generally highly regarded ( hopefully still now ? ), & the not-dissimilar look of films on DVD on the shelf, for myself at least, has a feeling of warmth & value.

I think I read a while back ( not sure where - may even have been here ) that episode 2 of UM had a few seconds missing which was revealed in comparison with the off-air audio, & that it was hoped that gap would be 'patched' by those restoring the episode.
( I know there was a similar missing bit for Galaxy 4 : 'Airlock', which was excellently sorted out, but I think I also read of a short gap in UM ep 2 )
If so, re the new DVD release; does anyone know if the missing seconds of UM episode 2 were patched with the relevant audio reinstated ?
And, if so, where in the episode is that segment ?
If it is the case & anyone knows, thanks for any replies.

re DVDs versus downloads : Though I can appreciate that physical media probably have a worse effect on the environment; which is a very real concern.

Agreed. I have no interest in watching anything that way, I need a physical product. If the future is downloads, I don't want to be restricted to using only a computer to watch what I buy. The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear episodes I got from iTunes will not play on my TV. If the future is downloads, I'll stick with the past.

I just want to physically buy a DVD copy. In the past I went to Sainsburys or Tescos or Asda. No such luck with this release. I'm in the middle of moving house and haven't easy access to the Internet. Are HMV stocking the DVD? The branch in Ipswich is...

Finally made it to Gloucester HMV yesterday and bought UM DVD. Watched it last night. It was fascinating for me to watch the elusive episode 2 as I fell asleep during the original transmission! Hm. Glad I've seen it and episode 3. Both episodes were rather flat, bordering on the dull. And the telesnap reconstructions show EXACTLY why it is so important to recover episodes. The audio has long passages with little sound where with the limited images it is near impossible to determine what is going on. Episode 4 becomes increasingly incomprehensible. Still I'm glad I have it amd most importantly on DVD!

They tell you what characters are doing that is not shown in the telesnaps.

I find it's just easier to listen to the audio version on CD for the missing episodes (there, you've got narration to cover the bits where there's no dialogue) and switch to DVD for the complete episodes.

Look Tony luv,The Monster of Peladon is fantastic.Alright? "Barry, I need to somehow create a visual shorthand to indicate that these people are, in fact, employed as miners. Do you think they'd have pit helmets on Peladon?" "No, Lennie, I think you should just inexplicably give them all stupid haircuts that make them vaguely resemble badgers". "Fair enough".

Oh how I laughed:) To paraphrase Paul McCartney talking about critical reaction to the Beatles White Album - 'It's bloody Pertwee season 11 with Sarah Jane Smith - get over it!' And Elizabeth Sladen is at her most beautiful in this serial. She'd just finished a modelling job...
