It is said that Muriel was the Television Announcer on the opening night of Associated-Rediffusion. Can anyone confirm that and would they know when the Opening Night was and if that exists, containing Muriel as the Announcer please. www.fulltable.com/vts/h/hero/04.jpgIf you zoom in to the top, you can see the date is 29 September 1956, perhaps little did Muriel realise then, that she would become even busier, for the next 30 years. The other piece says she was working on the A-R show Close-Up, which I think was quite a hi-brow programme. Does anything exist of that?

Muriel Young makes a brief appearance in Southern Television’s 21st Anniversary programme of 1979, speaking about working on advertising magazine programmes. youtu.be/WSl43IDSYNE?t=22m53s (Starts at 23:05) A bit later in the same programme, Tony Blackburn talks about three pilot pop programmes, - “As You Like It”, “New Release” and “Countdown” – which all preceded “Time For Blackburn”. youtu.be/WSl43IDSYNE?t=38m4sMany thanks to fellow Southern TV enthusiast TheBluechickens for tracking these down. ~ian

Part of the first night of Rediffusion exists (the opening Guildhall speech) but I don't think the whole evening. No idea as regards Muriel Young announcing on that night but it sounds a bit early for her to have been doing it (before my time, I'm afraid). I mainly remember seeing her in vision during Rediffusion children's slots - often after Small Time if this only ran to 10 or 12 minutes - talking to Pussycat Willum prior to the 5pm programme. I had no idea she worked for other companies at the same time though. A busy woman!

I'm afraid that I can't help you. You'd need to contact UTV yourself. I understand Ken. thanks for your reply. I will ask Kaleidoscope to ask UTV. Let you know outcome. the initial enquiry by Kaleidoscope to UTV proved fruitless. But that's not the end of the story. For I have just received this from Chris Perry of Kaleidoscope. "I've done a bit more digging thanks to Ken Griffin. UTV do indeed hold this complete episode: Hullo There! - Women's Magazine: Culloden Hotel/Getting Fit Tx Date: 05/10/1966 Sound : Com Mag 1. Muriel Young interviews Mrs White about running the Culloden Hotel. (05.55); 2. Myrtle McCaffrey goes to Buster McShane's health studio to get her measurements taken by Mary Peters ( his secretary) and does her first exercises (01:50). c " This is marvellous news, great thanks must go to Chris and Ken for making this happen.

I really had no idea she was such a legend. This thread is turning into a petition for canonisation.

I really had no idea she was such a legend. This thread is turning into a petition for canonisation. Either that or someone is putting together a TV programme on dear Muriel and didn't want to pay for a researcher.

I really had no idea she was such a legend. This thread is turning into a petition for canonisation. My sense is that she seems to have been a trailblazer for women in ITV who has been overlooked because her output lay predominantly outside drama. She's also interesting in that she seems to have had an unusual degree of career mobility for a married woman in broadcasting in the 1960s. She was the first woman to hold some positions - certainly she was the first woman credited as a programme editor at UTV. Previous women's series at the station had been presented by women but overseen by men.

Just found out on Lostshows.com that Hullo There! 1966-1968, all 267 episodes are Missing. So the episode 8 05/10/66 located by Chris and Ken above is a very important discovery!

I had no idea she worked for other companies at the same time though. A busy woman! thanks to Chris, for the last post, inserts are still good news, because before, there was nothing of Hullo There...now there is. Besides working for A-R, Southern, Ulster and Granada, Muriel also in the 1970's appeared on ATV as a panelist on New Faces, 30/10/76, 25/12/76 and 5/3/78. These are all held at the bfi, as is her appearance for Tyne Tees Highway programme Weardale 8/1/89. She also worked for Channel 4 as a producer of Ladybirds 1983-4. At the start of this thread, the question was did she ever appear/work for the BBC. Yes, her first screen appearance was in a BBC tv episode called Lady Precious Stream, 7/3/50, which Lostshows has as Missing. Muriel had no character name, neither did a Hazel Adair, who went on to be a tv writer of Sixpenny Corner, some Emergency Ward -10 and later creator Of Crossroads. We, the people born in the 50's, who grew up in the late 50's, through the 60's into the 70's, had less, yet we had more, because we were happier, through being entertained, much by television, which was entertaining because of the people on there, Muriel being one of them. Television tended to be watched by all the family together, so all generations were familiar with the children's programmes and children watched all manner of television. Not only the people viewing those music, like Lift Off and children's programmes made by Granada, but also the people appearing on them, had grown up watching people like Muriel Young. I think part of her enduring appeal was that she seemed the same as us, but of course, was a true professional at her work and good to work with. Muriel had married tv director Cyril Coke in 1954, so television was probably more of a way of life than anything else. One of the highlights of Bert Weedon's This Is Your Life, which exists and can be seen in full on youtube, is seeing him reunited with Howard Williams and Muriel Young, some 20 years after they all appeared together on Tuesday Rendezvous and Five 'o' Clock Club. Bert says Muriel still has those sparkling eyes, that she had then.

thanks to Sue for the last post, very good to see that, Huff Puff Junction, in that write-up! thanks to John for the previous post, of the shows Lostshows has Missing with Muriel Young. Kaleidoscope say they struggle sometimes to list everyone that appeared in an episode of a show. Hence the following 6 episodes of Thank Your Lucky Stars(topical at the moment), where these are listed on Lostshows.com as Missing, which Muriel appeared in the Guest DJ, does not list her appearing, simply because of lack of space on Lostshows to list everyone. Every episode of Thank Your Lucky Stars, had a Host and a Guest DJ, besides the performers. Saturday 10 March 1962, Host Brian Matthew, Guest DJ Muriel Young. Saturday 1 December 1962, Host Brian Matthew, Guest DJ Muriel Young. Saturday 27 July 1963, Host Pete Murray, Guest DJ Muriel Young. Saturday 15 February 1964, Host Brian Matthew, Guest DJ Muriel Young. Saturday 12 September 1964, Guest Host Mark Wynter, Guest DJ Muriel Young. Saturday 5 December 1964, Host Unknown, Guest DJ Muriel Young. ABC Weekend Television who made Thank Your Lucky Stars, is yet another television station that Muriel appeared on.
