MM 5th December 1970 Battle next FebruaryGinger Baker and Elvin Jones's drum battle due to be held on Friday last week was cancelled. This was because of the Musicians Union refusal to grant a work permit. Scheduled to be held at an Airforce appearance at London's Polytechnic,it will now be held next February. Robin Turner of the Robert Stigwood Organisation, told the MM: "We were prepared to go ahead without notifying the MU. There was'nt time to give eight weeks notice for a work permit. But as Elvin was involved and might have been banned from future visits,we felt it unfair to put the onus on him. "The Union were within their rights, but there should be facilities for dealing with cases where it is not possible to apply two months in advance. Elvin was willing to play for nothing and he would'nt have robbed any British musician of work." William's research has revealed an '8-week rule'.
Maybe it was too much hassle to apply for permits for all members of e.g. a USA rock band. Given that eight weeks in advance, there was no certainty that their record would be a UK hit?

Further to my earlier post on this thread...
The long awaited drum battle between Ginger Baker and Elvin Jones finally took place on Monday the 2nd February 1971 at London's Lyceum
It was considered a draw! Ginger a winner for his handling and emotion, Elvin a winner for precision and crispness.

I don't think the ban on miming came into force until AROUND 23/06/1966.
The Beatles mimed on 16/06/1966, as did the Hollies.
This article is excellent - proving that the MOR and jazz/swing/ballad-singing acts didn't like the miming ban either, for the most part.
