That does not mean that he is restoring Dr. Who episodes, lets not forget he is also working to transfer films and tapes to modern formats for his clients around the world. . . .
That does not mean that he has not found missing ITV or other lost shows.

First, thanks for everyone with the first hand information who can fill in the details. I want to add that we as fans who are more interested in the recovery of missing episodes should know that the paperwork may have been filled out, but occasionally stuff doesn't get to where it was supposed to. Otherwise, there would be nothing to find. I agree with everyone about the negotiations. It can be a long time between discovering that the episodes exist, the actual procurement of them, the double-checking of their actual existence and condition, the restoration of the episodes, and then the actual announcement of the find. Depending on the conditions, this can take quite a while. This is the only bit of the process I don't really understand - why the announcement is only ever after all stages are complete. I've never understood why the finds can't be announced immediately after the prints are back in the UK - before any restoration takes place. Fans know that the restoration takes time, and won't expect them to be immediately available. One reason is that if you have dodgy prints, you would have the option of trying to extract better copies from others out there - assuming they exist in the first place. Besides, we saw the frenzy people had over The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear. Can you imagine if they got something, announced it, and then discovered the print was, to use Phil's term, "mush"?

I've never understood why the finds can't be announced immediately after the prints are back in the UK - before any restoration takes place. Fans know that the restoration takes time, and won't expect them to be immediately available. Web and Enemy were a one-off example, as they wanted an immediate release of the nine episodes onto iTunes rather than wait a few months between announcing and finish restoring/release. It was probably also a test to see how iTunes fared against a typical DVD release (which it blew away, which means we can expect iTunes-first releases in the future). Fans often think restoration is a term used solely for DVD release, but you have to remember if the episode has been sitting in a poorly maintained film store for 40 years it'll need some TLC before anyone gets to see it, so it's best to make sure the episode is entirely salvageable before saying anything. It would be great if there's already a handful of (not necessarily just Doctor Who) lost episodes being "restored" but it's more likely he's still sniffing out leads. Everyone is hopeful the search will take months instead of years but we'll see. Time will tell.

Did TIE Ltd have an office in London? Yes. Keep in mind that TIE was run by David Stirling, who also ran over companies and ... uh ... operations out of the same London offices. Wasn't one of the other companies, "Universal Exports"?

Mush is still worth saving, BTW.
Don't forget how pleased people get when we just find *stills* from a missing episode, let alone clips even if only of seconds in length.

Also, wonderful techniques such as VidFire sadly aren't widely perceived as "restoration" necessarily (more enhancement). So transfer of old tape formats on to modern media is correctly identified as restoration in a sense. This work exists for PM outside of any DW finds (which would only represent a small portion of his job).

Is there any reason why UM2 can't be released as iTunes / download only, if there's no prospect of a DVD ?

Is there any reason why UM2 can't be released as iTunes / download only, if there's no prospect of a DVD ? I see two possible reasons.
1. As fans we know very well what's going on and could fathom why a solitary orphan episode would come up. The general public would be confused beyond belief and there would be Emails asking what the deal was.
2. With the BBC's own video service coming in 6-9 months at this point I don't see them putting anything so niche on iTunes in advance of that.
Assuming of course the reason isn't "because the rest has been found including a better print of Ep 2".

well.. some episodes were released around the time of the itunes launch..
Would be great if there was some surprises at the time of the BBC's own video service.

Paul. Are you aware of the unsalvagable Pertwee episode? Can you elaborate on the particulars and/or if any more were discovered? I'm still interested in this question if you would be kind enough to answer?

Unless the update is "last Thursday I was browsing through a film vault when I came upon The Myth Makers." What i meant was these silly updates that dont say anything of value ! Side steps any real questions people have ECT ! And that would be great if Makers turned up. My gut feeling is march if there is anything back. Just what with the new Video service launch and all. If nothing i will get back to my knitting lol I will get my coat

This guy could give a politician a run for his or her money lol.
