Oh...a promo film for Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann (1968), in the snow and ice, which was presumably a BBC-made clip as I haven't seen it since...the band in the studio doing Ragamuffin Man (spring 1969)...the rooftop sequence at Apple being shown many weeks when The Beatles' Get Back was in the charts / at number 1 (1969)...The Archies cartoon clip for Sugar Sugar, which was intercut with studio dancers when the song was at number 1 (late 1969)...Edison Lighthouse with Love Grows (in colour round a friend's house as they had the only colour set in our neighbourhood in 1970!)...Gerry Monroe singing a live vocal of Sally over pre-recorded backing in the TOTP studio (1970)...John Kongos with band in the studio for He's Gonna Step On You Again...a promo clip for Hot Love by T.Rex (again, presumably a TOTP-made promo as I haven't seen it since) with the three piece band walking towards camera in possibly a fish eye shot, Bolan or one of group wearing pointed hat and long trench coat...a TOTP promo for Jonathan King's Lazy Bones, utilising puppet-type animation featuring a skeleton (similar to the one in the Maxell tape ads in the '80s - the lazy bones of the song, presumably)... Butterscotch in the studio performing Don't You Know, again with a live vocal over backing track (all these 1971). These live vocal ones I recall well as I remember remarking that they didn't sound quite like the record I knew! Again in '71, a film clip for Banner Man by Blue Mink, with the band standing in line in a yard, with the camera panning along...Clodagh Rodgers singing Jack In The Box (in hot pants, I think!)...the TOTP film for Johnny Reggae by The Piglets (1971) featuring comic-strip / pop art style graphics...The Fortunes performing Freedom Come Freedom Go in the studio (1972). Is this the sort of thing you want, Ray? I'll just amend this post to add more if I think of them, rather than clutter the thread up. These are just a few that come instantly to mind. Others would be triggered by mention of particular artists or events! EXACTLY the sort of thing needed!

I can vividly remember Elton John performing on TOTP in the early 70s - I always looked out to see what kind of glasses he was wearing. I can recall him wearing glasses which had windscreen wipers on them during one performance - not sure what song that was for though - hopefully someone with a better memory than me will know. My earliest memory of TOTP is "Wanderin' Star" by Lee Marvin - for some reason that video clip has stuck in my memory over the years - I was 6 at the time and thought it was really weird!

Tony Blackburn is central to that time. Yet he probably missed the wilder excesses, and never met many of the pop stars at the time. And that article explains why.

I remember Mott The Hoople's performance of All The Way From Memphis ... Ian Hunter was at a piano. If my memory serves me well, the camera panned into him from the back and to the right. I also recall Blackfoot Sue's Standing In The Road performance. At the climatic end, the camera panned in and out rapidly and there were flashing lights. I can recall Barry Blue's fringed jacket for School Love. Kenny (the solo artist) being on around Sept/Oct 1972, Heart Of Stone. Just to confirm Shelley's memory of Mott on TOTPs with 'All The Way From Memphis' Hunter playing piano .. I remember Roxy Music's Andy Mackay playing sax !

Thanks for putting that article up. I read Tony B's autobiog ... radio man through & through. Loves his music and presenting it to the world ...nothing more, nothing less. Good for him, he's one of the Good Guys

Yes indeed. 'Pick of the Pops' (R2, Sats 1pm) is a refreshing change from the rest of the week. Always worth seeking out on the I-player.

I found this article about J.Saville and TOTP in the Edinburgh Evening News dated 4/8/72
J.Saville: "Some of my friends in the nick up north say, Can't we have some legs before they turn of the telly 15 mins after the show starts?"
So J.Saville obliged with the 1st number on TOTP the set was littered with leggy, busty birds (sic) in 2 piece swimsuits.
Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs were the group during this
J.Saville was in beachwear
Pan's People were dancing to Chairmen of the Board's "Working on a building of Love" into an athletic parade for sweater girls (sic)
J.Saville later said (turning a female girl's face to the camera and said to the viewers "Oh,if only you had colour telly, you'd see she was blushing!"
The girl giggled but stuck around and the next time the camera caught her J.Saville said "You're from Edinburgh are'nt you? I can tell you come from Edinburgh, you're so beautiful."[/b]

I can recall Pink Floyd singing 'See Emily Play' - the picture alternated between normal pic and negative & back several times as the camera panned in on the band...
plus Traffic singing 'Hole in My Shoe' - Dave Mason playing a sitar sat cross legged - a close up still of a little girl's face during the spoken passage 'I climbed on the back of a giant albatross...'
also The Searchers doing (I think) 'Take it or Leave it' on film from Australia (circa 1965 or 66) they all waved goodbye at the end...and when the pic cut back to Pete Murray in TOTP studio it was 'upside down' at first - as they were 'down under' !

Thank you very much William for the info on pans peoples performance from the 3rd aug 1972 edition of Totp ,it can now be added to pans peoples totp database on one for the dads website ,ive found the year 1972 very hard to fill in the songs that the ladies danced to on each edition ,I will not fill in any entry unless there is proof somehow that the ladies did actually dance to the discs ,and this piece of info you have provided is just the sort of concrete evidence that im looking for ,even the remainder of pans ladies themselves struggle to recall a lot of their work that has been wiped ,so you've done an excellent job for me by posting the article ,many thanks once again.
