Does anyone know if any studio footage from Doomwatch: Sex and Violence exists in the archives? I'm in contact with someone who believes they have a copy of around less than two minutes of studio footage from the recording of the episode.

Sounds like the two minutes or so of unused material on the end of the original tx spool, which is on the copy held by the BBC - occasionally tx tapes have little bits of extra stuff left on for one reason or another.

Thanks Andrew. Do you know if anymore footage like this exists for Doomwatch?

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Sometimes this sort of thing can be very short, like another glimpse of the last shot of the episode. Some late 60s/early 70s tapes have the physical cuts made to the master tape stuck on the end, which can be more substantial - "The Forsyte Saga" is one good example of that.

Is the footage by any chance where the actors expressions/revulsion is shown whilst watching the footage of the execution?

Is the footage by any chance where the actors expressions/revulsion is shown whilst watching the footage of the execution? Yes it is, about a couple of mins of reaction shots .. and indeed had the execution footage itself been the real reason the eps was pulled from broadcast ... it could have been (relatively simply) re-edited to excise that footage and replace it with the off screen reactions .. and then broadcast ... The real reason of course was the potential libel issues concerning many of the "fictional" characters ... which could easily be seen as parodies of real people who had commented on "taste/decency" issues in actuality. Impossible to remove the characters from the eps and show it!

Does anyone know why Doomwatch was ultimately canceled? Was it, as some fans suggest, to do with the potential legal trouble the series could generate for the BBC (such as in the case of "Sex and Violence", but also in its representation of the government)?
Also, does anyone know WHEN it was canceled or rather was it before or after filming started on "The Devil's Demolition"? I've heard people claim that footage exists from the filming, but I've never encountered anyone who has a copy or even seen any evidence that it does/did exist.

DOOMWATCH was generally thought to have run it's course by those in power at the time.
The 13th series three episode existed only as a script, (by Roger Parkes), but budget over-runs on earlier episodes meant that it would have been nigh-on impossible to record. Nothing was ever recorded from it.
