I was reminded of this series when I was helping my son with some homework on the Norman Conquest. I remember watching it as a little boy, it being broadcast on Sunday afternoon if memory serves. Anyway, the Missing Eps index says none of it has survived. Have any inserts, telesnaps etc remained or is this programme an example of one which has been totally destroyed in every way?

The only thing known to exist for this series is the trailer (which is actually quite good with a fair bit of footage), which survives on a film recording of "International Athletics" from 12th September 1965.

Thanks for the information - very helpful. Just out of interest, how did you find out about the surviving trailer? Does it exist in any accessible form?

Not particularly accessible I'm afraid - it's one of a number of trails that have turned up during research of film recordings of live programmes held in the BBC archive.

The accessibility (or lack of it) to things like this is a topic in its own right, Andrew. I am sure the trailer is of no commercial value, and would only be of interest to a very few people so nothing would be lost if it were file-shared on the web. Dream on, Brian!

I seem to recall that Hereward was played by Alfred Lynch. The only bit I can remember is when he killed a polar bear that had escaped from a menagerie!
