Was the Max Headroom chat show exported at all? It wouldn't surprise me if the UK show was sold to Japan. In 1988 they released a laserdisc containing clips from the UK shows including episodes that are now "missing": 1. Opening: Welcome to the Max Headroom Show! 2. Hollywood Scandal: Sexy Talk With Jackie Collins [S03E10] 3. Born to Play Wild!? Pianist: Max 4. Sting & Max in Controversy: Golf vs Tennis [S02E01] 5. Wanna Date? Max on Video Dating 6. Sour But Tasty: Lemon, Jack Lemmon [S03E08] 7. Free Spirit: Jackson Browne Under Arrest [S03E09] 8. Tina’s Hot Christmas Present [1986 Xmas Special] 9. Max Aid?! With Help from Bob Geldof [1986 Xmas Special] 10. Max in Harmony: I Love My Shades 11. Why Own Clubs for a Walk on the Course: Rutger Hauer [S03E05] 12. Stack of Vouchers for Millionaires: Tracy Ullman [S03E04] 13. Superstar in Disguise: Michael Caine's Best Pal [S03E01] 14. Tell’ Em All! Censored Max Edition 15. Max, Live on Stage! 16. Mystery Voice of GREMLIN in Person: Howie Mandell [S03E07] 17. Ending: Never Can Say Goodbye www.lddb.com/laserdisc/33183/SFXL-004/Best-of-Max-Headroom-The-%281987%29

well Simon Kelly's post above makes more sense of this - I did wonder why when I saw the list of missing episodes, given the care taken with the Torrent uploads, that a third season pack wasn't available back then - not surprised if these files live on via other torrent sites - the only issue there is whether anyone would still be seeding them.
hopefully Kal can go back to the rights holders and tidy up this information now - although possibly these holdings are BFI donations which might explain the gaps? If any remain missing after that then hopefully someone will come forward with VHS copies as they will be a step up from the AVI's.

Think I have a Max interview from The 80s in my collection with Roger Daltrey when Roger was promoting his single After The Fire.Is that a missing item?

I'm pretty sure the UK series was shown late night here in Australia. Further... now this is bizarre... does anyone remember this (via Wikipedia)
"On November 22, 1987, two Chicagotelevision stations had their broadcast signals hijacked by an unknown person wearing a Max Headroom mask. The first incident took place for 25 seconds during the sportscast on the 9 O'Clock news on WGN-TVChannel 9 and two hours later around 11 o'clock on PBS affiliate WTTW Channel 11 for about 90 seconds during a broadcast of theDoctor Who episode "Horror of Fang Rock". The hacker mumbled nonsense during his interruptions, including the phrase "The Greatest World Newspaper nerds", a reference to WGN's call letters, standing forWorld's Greatest Newspaper. A homemade Max Headroom background rocked back and forth as he talked. The video ended with a pair of exposed buttocks being spanked with a flyswatter. The culprits were never identified."
I remember seeing the taped footage on a news bulletin. Does that footage still exist?

I can remember this being reported at the time but only with small clips shown.

I will be getting all my 'stuff' out of storage at some point in the very near future. I taped (I think) all of the Max Headroom Shows with the music videos. But more to the point I also taped the interview shows. I taped all of those at the time. I seem to remember missing taping half of one show due to an over run or some such event. If I do have them, I will let all know. I did not know they were missing. Fingers crossed they are there and ok by the time I get to them.

I picked up a couple of unofficial max Headroom DVD's at a boot sale a few years ago. I thought I had all the episodes of the music show but I have either misplaced one of the discs or I have mis-remembered. Anyway, the Jack lemmon and Vidal Sassoon episodes are there. They are very washed out and come via Cinemax.

I wouldn't call the US talk show a "third" season. As the article explains "The Original Max Talking Headroom Show" was a 6-part series recorded exclusively for American audiences and broadcast on the premium cable channel, Cinemax, in the summer of 1987. Each show had 2 guests which means there are 12 other "celebrities" who have been interviewed by Max: Jerry Hall, Penn & Teller, Mary Tyler Moore, Robin Leach, Don King, Emo Philips, Madeline Kahn, Ron Reagan (the President's son!), Paul Shaffer, William Shatner, Grace Jones and Gilbert Gottfried.
Presumably these 6 shows still exist in their original NTSC broadcast format, but they shouldn't be included in Lost Shows as that only covers UK programmes.

Due to all the conflicting articles online about the original Max Headroom shows, I decided to dig a bit deeper and get the original transmission dates for every UK episode using daily newspaper listings.
After the TV movie aired on Thursday, 4th April 1985, I was surprised to find that the original series of video clips actually ran for the next 13 weeks, every Saturday, at 6pm on Channel 4. Here are the dates and the descriptions (if any) given in the listings:
THE MAX HEADROOM SHOW - Series 1 (1985) S01E01 Sat 6 Apr, 6.00pm A new rock video series. Among those featured in this programme are Macro Mad, King Kurt and Cabaret Voltaire. Macro Mad (sic) is actually referring to the German band, Makromad, who someone remembers as being the first video of the first show! The song was "Tausend Tage Fete" (1984). TV Times mentions that videos from Go West, Bauhaus and Billy Idol were also featured.
S01E02 Sat 13 Apr, 6.00pm Rock videos, including this week, The Thompson Twins. TV Times mentions Peter Gabriel, Starvation and Go West (again! Maybe it was a different song?)
S01E03 Sat 20 Apr, 6.00pm Rock videos, including numbers performed by The Cocteau Twins. TV Times doesn't mention ANY artists for this show, or any of the remaining 10 episodes of this series. :-( The Times newspaper, dated Fri 19 Apr, carried a full-page ad for Channel 4 advertising programme highlights for the weekend. It reads: "On Saturday at 6.00 we leap 20 minutes into the future. Where the world's first computer-generated DJ, M...M...Max...Max...Head...Head Head...Headroom plays videos from The Vapours, Joe Jackson, and The...The...The...Police. Watch out, pop of the flo...flo...flops." Ian remembers Godley and Creme's "Cry" as being one of the other videos featured (see his response below)
S01E04 Sat 27 Apr, 6.00pm Rock videos.
S01E05 Sat 4 May, 6.00pm Rock videos.
S01E06 Sat 11 May, 6.00pm The Times newspaper, dated Thu 9 May, carried a full-page ad for Channel 4 advertising programme highlights for the weekend. It reads: "No DJ is safe. It's Rock...Rock...Rock and Roll on Saturday at 6. There are videos galore when Ma...Ma...Max Headroom comes rolling out of Big...Big...Big Time Cable TV, and puts every DJ's job in jeopardy. Intro...ducing Ma...Ma...Madness, China Crisis, Supertramp...tramp...tramp, Spandau...Spandau...Spandau... Roll over all you other DJ's with plastic faces."
S01E07 Sat 18 May, 6.00pm Pop video programme.
S01E08 Sat 25 May, 6.00pm A selection of rock videos.
S01E09 Sat 1 Jun, 6.00pm A selection of rock videos.
S01E10 Sat 8 Jun, 6.00pm
S01E11 Sat 15 Jun, 6.00pm
S01E12 Sat 22 Jun, 6.00pm Pop video programme.
S01E13 Sat 29 Jun, 6.00pm Part of this episode is on You Tube so I can confirm some of the tracks: The Redskins - Bring It Down (1985) plus short segments from: Ledernacken And Band – Ich Will Dich Essen (1984) The Backsters - Handclappin' (1984) Sid Vicious - My Way (1978) The show ends with Max singing the full version of "It's Been A Great Show" (an edited version is used at the end of Series 2) This show also features the interview with Sting (re-used in Series 2) but without the music video of his new song!
After this first series ended, Max continued to appear on our screens as a guest in other shows. Here are a couple of appearances from 1985: Fri 16 Aug, 8.00pm-1.15am The Big Tube - Guests include Max Headroom. Fri 23 Aug, 5.30pm Bliss - The agony aunt is Channel 4's computerized presenter Max Headroom who is emerging as a formidable chat show guest.
The TV Movie was also repeated on Fri 27 Dec 1985 at 8.30pm.
THE MAX HEADROOM SHOW - Series 2 (1986) S02E01 Tue 15 Jul, 11.35pm Includes an interview with Sting. (r) Now this is where I got confused as the newspaper lists this programme as a repeat. It does include at least two artists who were played on the first show of Series 1 (King Kurt and Cabaret Voltaire). However, the Sting interview could not be from April 1985 as the album he discusses wasn't released until June, and the single played from it didn't come out until July 1985, so it's most likely to have been recorded after the first series had finished. This episode (listing as missing by Lost Shows) is circulating online, although it's referred to as S01E01. The track-listing is as follows: Jean-Michel Jarre - Zoolook (1984) King Kurt - Destination Zululand (October 1983) Japan - Visions of China (1981) Guest : Sting Cabaret Voltaire - Sensoria (October 1984) Patrick Macnee and Honor Blackman - Kinky Boots (1983) Sting - If You Love Somebody Set Them Free (July 1985)
S02E02 Tue 22 Jul, 11.00pm With Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes. (r) Arcadia's single, "Election Day", wasn't released until October 1985, so the interview most likely took place around that time. This episode is circulating online as S01E03 (?) and is another "missing" episode according to Lost Shows. Full track-listing is: Intaferon - Steamhammer Sam (1983) Bryan Adams - Heaven (April 1985) Jesse Rae - Over The Sea (1985) Guests: Simon Le Bon & Nick Rhodes Severed Heads - Goodbye Tonsils (September 1984) Arcadia - Election Day (October 1985) David Bowie - Loving The Alien (May 1985)
S02E03 Tue 29 Jul, 11.00pm From Blackpool's Pleasure Beach. This episode is NOT listed as a repeat and I've no idea why it says from Blackpool either! I'm guessing this is the episode being shared online as S01E02, with this track listing: Supertramp - Cannonball (May 1985) Waysted - Love Loaded (October 1983) Heat N Serve - Rats on a Budget (1984) Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (1982) Hit List - Into the Fire (April 1985) China Crisis - King in a Catholic Style (May 1985) Udo Lindenberg - Germans (1984)
S02E04 Tue 5 Aug, 11.30pm Featuring Roger Daltrey Once again, although most of the videos and links are recycled from Series 1, the Daltrey interview and single appear to be new material. This episode is being shared as S01E04, with the following track-listing: Ultravox - Love's Great Adventure (September 1984) Madness - Driving in My Car (July 1982) Heaven 17 - Let Me Go (1982) Go West - Call Me (May 1985) Guest: Roger Daltrey The Pale Fountains - Jean's Not Happening (December 1984) Roger Daltrey - After The Fire (September 1985) Elton John & Millie Jackson - Act of War (June 1985)
S02E05 Tue 12 Aug, 11.00pm Highlights from previous shows The description given for this episode suggests that it's a selection of links and videos previously used in Series 1. In fact, minus the celebrity interviews and accompanying videos, it's likely that all six episodes are simply rehashed clips from the previous year. Circulating online as S01E05, with the following track-listing: The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary (May 1985) Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey (1982) Izzy Royal - Coronation Street (1983) The Kinks - Come Dancing (1982) Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield (1983) Ledernacken And Band – Ich Will Dich Essen (I Want To Eat You) (1984)
S02E06 Tue 19 Aug, 11.45pm In the last of the series, Max interviews Boy George. This was the last show to use just music videos. When the show returned for it's third series in 1987 it was a talk show with just the occasional music video thrown in. Circulating as S01E06, the track-listing is: The Police - Synchronicity 2 (1983) Belouis Some - Imagination (1984) Paul Hardcastle - 19 (May 1985) Black Lace - Agadoo (June 1984) Guest: Boy George Culture Club - Victims (1983) Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band - I'm the Urban Spaceman (1968) Max Headroom singing "It's been a great show"
Notice how all the music videos were from 1982-1985 (with the exception of the short Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band clip in the final episode). Even though Series 2 was broadcast in 1986, it didn't contain any music released after October 1985, and appears to be simply a "best of" Series 1 with newly recorded celebrity interviews.
I would have watched most of Series 1 when it was originally broadcast and, to be honest, I don't remember ANY interviews in it, so I'm guessing they were a new feature for the second series and would end up forming the basis of the Christmas special and the third series.
MAX HEADROOM'S GIANT CHRISTMAS TURKEY (1986) Fri 26 Dec, 10pm The guests include Bob Geldof, Tina Turner, and Dave Edmunds.
Note that the title of his Christmas Special differs from the series, so it is included separately in the Lost Shows database, as is the TV Movie from 1985.
THE MAX HEADROOM SHOW - Series 3 (1987) S03E01 Tue 6 Jan, 10.45pm The guest is Michael Caine. S03E02 Tue 13 Jan, 10.50pm The guests include Vidal Sassoon. S03E03 Tue 20 Jan, 10.50pm The guest is Oliver Reed. S03E04 Tue 27 Jan, 10.45pm The guest is Tracey Ullman. S03E05 Tue 3 Feb, 10.45pm The guest is Rutger Hauer. S03E06 Tue 10 Feb, 10.50pm The guest is David Byrne of Talking Heads. S03E07 Tue 17 Feb, 10.50pm The guest is Howie Mandel, a St Elsewhere stalwart. S03E08 Tue 24 Feb, 10.50pm The guest is Jack Lemmon. S03E09 Tue 3 Mar, 10.50pm The guest is Jackson Browne. S03E10 Tue 10 Mar, 10.50pm The guest is Jackie Collins.
So we now have the broadcast details of all 31 original Max Headroom shows made in the UK: The TV movie, broadcast twice during 1985. Series 1, 13 episodes from 1985. Series 2, 6 episodes from 1986. The Xmas Special, first broadcast 1986, repeated 1988. Series 3, 10 episodes from 1987.
I suppose I should correct the Wikipedia page now!

THE MAX HEADROOM SHOW - Series 1 (1985) S01E03 Sat 20 Apr, 6.00pm Rock videos, including numbers performed by The Cocteau Twins. Excellent, thanks for the work Simon. The one recording I know I have features the Cocteau Twins performing "Aikea Guinea" but none of the sources cited in earlier posts included it. Thanks to your research I now know which episode I have. (For info, the excellent video of Godley and Creme singing "Cry" is in the same programme). I believe I may also have the final programme of that series but I have no written record (or memory) of which acts featured. ~iw

I might have some of the original series myself on Betamax as the 6 o'clock slot is the one I remember watching. It's a shame that every online source about the show (apart from Lost Shows) gives the same misinformation about there only being 16 UK episodes plus a Christmas special. Also, although the talk show may have been recorded in 1986, it didn't air until 1987. I've updated the Wikipedia page and removed all the links to the misleading sources, citing Lost Shows instead. Here's a permanent link to my current edit, although no doubt it will be challenged and undone by someone within a few days...
