I happened to be visiting my parents in Devon a few weekends ago and watched a local news item concerning the much understaffed and underfunded South West Film Archive. The feature was mainly a thinly veiled swipe at the lack of Government funding. Towards the end of the item they showed a 'room' stacked with unsorted film cans and tapes which had yet to be viewed ! It just goes to show that there are still areas of unsorted material even in local archives ! Alan S

I can't imagine there would be anything much of value in local archives. Maybe footage of value to the region or television archive, but nothing legendary. I could be wrong though.
However, discoveries like this do help to make future discoveries more hopeful.

Apparently episodes of Doctor Who and Top Of The Pops were found at regional TV stations so there could be something there, stranger things have happened.

Here's a good example, as many of you will know, from October last year of how something mis-catalogued at the South West archive turned up. www.bbc.co.uk/devon/news_features/2004/beatles.shtmlTook all of 40 years to find. Shows how often that particular film can marked 'sport' was opened up - never. Not a criticism of the staff there at all, just a good example of how material generically labelled is rarely looked at. Cheers LD
