Two lost Top Of The Pops appearances popped up on BBC TV last night. First of all I was pleasantly surprised when someone alerted me to the fact a short clip of The Tremeloes 'Silence Is Golden' was used on BBC4's 'Disowned and Disabled'. Secondly, a clip from the legendary 'Purple Haze' performance by The Jimi Hendrix Experience was seen in BBC1's 'Imagine' documentary. The BBC have had a poor copy of this for some time but last nights clip appeared to be from a superior source.

Hi Mike, Thanks for letting us know about The Tremeloes clip, I'll watch out for it to-night. I taped the Imagine: Jimi Hendrix programme but still to watch it, glad to hear of the Purple Haze superior clip.

Thanks for the heads up Mike, I'm looking forward to watching the Hendrix one tonight. I wonder if the BBC have the "Wind Cries Mary" TOTP performance in broadcastable condition as well. It makes you wonder why they so rarely show certain clips when others get repeated to death.

I saw the Hendrix clip last night, and as always when I see these kinds of clips I get annoyed at this 'not broadcastable quality' embargo. As far as I'm concerned if it's visible and audible then it's broadcastable. I wonder if one day they'll decide that 'b&w = unbroadcastable' and then decide to colourise every clip....

Yes the Purple Haze clip was definitely broadcastable quality, better than the Supremes 'Baby Love' one that gets regular outings. The programme was officially sanctioned by the Hendrix estate (which presumably explained the absence of any critical comments) so I was wondering if the clip came from them since they are supposed to have copies of this and The Wind Cries Mary. Perhaps they are being "proprietorial" and not making it available to the BBC to use regularly, but that's just me speculating of course.

It would be fantastic if "Haze" and "Mary" were back in the BBC archives in good quality versions Mike. I don't know why the Hendrix estate would want to keep copies of the TOTP performances to themselves - if this is in fact the case - when it would do their boy's legacy a lot more good to have regular BBC screenings showing him at his psychedelic peak.

Mark Cooper did say when I saw him many months ago now that he would show the occasional 'wiped' TOTP clip. He did keep his promise - it was NOT what I wanted (I proposed a whole show of wiped TOTP), but he did keep his promise. I did mention Hendrix - it's on the email I sent him that I still have. I had no idea about the Tremeloes (bearing in mind Chip Hawkes appeared on bass on my first band's demo tape, so that would have been of personal interest to me....)
