It is possible, though. Thanks to the clear-out when the ABC left their studios at Gore Hill, we now have the pilot and two complete seasons of "The Aunty Jack Show". (Not that means much to anyone outside Australia or under fifty!) I missed the issue of Memento which dealt with this Sue, but I was under the impression the National Archives had made the recovery?

That's just what I'd heard. You may be right.

OK, Cite and link below. Very brief, I had hoped for something extensive. "Video master copies and original 16mm film were deposited in the National Archives' Sydney repository (this'd be Chester Hill, the same site Damian Shanahan recovered the censor clips, and also Villawood Detention Center) in the mid-1980s." That sounds like News Free Zone (1985) to me; the Vintage Video segments with Aunty Jack/Flash Nick, etc. Which may have led to the tapes, films and negatives going to NAA. Grahame Bond had been the source of claims that they'd destroyed episodes, unless he was talking abut The Off Show then I don't know how this came about. Richard Miles' Aunty Jack Ogrophy (now sadly offline) was one of the reasons I started researching Doctor Who, he convinced me I didn't have to have access to the primary source to make inroads. Let this be a lesson to us all, you may be able to make a difference no matter your location! I'm sure the discovery made the sydney papers at the time Martin. Maybe info available on SMH archives? IIRC there was an aunty jack box set released by the ABC - perhaps there is info on dvd booklet?

The notes on the first series DVD say "For years there were rumours the series was lost..", and go on to state that the episodes came from the ABC Archives and were restored by the National Archives of Australia. It's not mentioned when this happened, or how it came about. "Aunty Jack" was certainly believed to be lost when I worked for the ABC in the Eighties, but at that time the ABC's film library was understaffed and years behind in cataloguing their holdings.
The ABC's output of programmes was smaller than the BBC's, and I expect there wasn't the same pressure to discard old recordings to make space for new material.

Dom Romeo: Fans for a long time have been bemoaning the lack of Aunty Jack on video and DVD; there were rumours that the ABC in its wisdom had taped over episodes or destroyed them. I don’t know what the true story is, but I’d love you to tell me. Rory O’Donoghue: The true story, and this is just for you, is that Four Corners taped over three episodes and we found out twenty-five years after they did that, so we had to dig up the costumes, go out and re-shoot three of the episodes and now there’s a little competition where you have to work out which three episodes… Grahame Bond:I’m the right size now, I can actually play Aunty Jack without the padding! No, the fabulous thing about this, I’d say, the heroes of this whole thing of gettingAunty Jack back and putting it on DVD are National Australian Archives and ABC Archives. They went into deep search mode. And yes, there were three video tapes that were wiped, but National Australian Archives had it all saved on film. Plus the ABC found huge amounts of colour footage that was shot for the first series. Like the Warepisode — ninety percent of that show is in colour. So those people did the hard yards and they really searched it out. And their restoration, at National Archives, is fantastic.

(Not that means much to anyone outside Australia or under fifty!) It's been announced that the ABC Ripponlea studios in Elsternwick (Melbourne) is finally closing. Do we know if there is a film library at the site that has yet to be cleared out, maybe there could be more lost gems found?
