Congrats on winning the 2012 Olympics to all of you on the other side of the Pond. I hope the Games go well for you.
Just to keep this post On topic, what Olympic footage exists in the BBC archives?

Does anyone happen to know whether there's any BBC TV coverage from the 1948 London games? I know that it was definitely originally televised.

My friend James says that the 1948 Women's Swimming appeared briefly in the Electric Blue series under the spoof compilation title 'Fantasy Flashback', but I cannot confirm if he was winding me up.

Yes, the London Olympic Games were televised by the BBC. Also, I believe there may be BBC newsreel items from this event.
One of my aunts, who lived in London in 1948, bought a Philips television set to watch the London Olympics. On leaving London, in September 1955, my aunt gave this set to my parents. It packed up in October 1958 and my Father bought another Philips television, which could receive both BBC and ITV.
Yours,

There is a lot of footage existing from the Helsinki Games in 1952 - but I see someone has beaten me to it with Berlin in 1936... However this website would appear to list what exists with the BFI: www.bfi.org.uk/nationallibrary/news/olympics/film-tv.phpApparently this lists Olympic footage as early as 1908. There are some excerpts purporting to be from 1896 but have since debunked: "...evidence from the film indicates that it is certainly the 1906 Interim Games".

Whoops! You were asking about the BBC, weren't you? No idea - sorry mate. But the BFI are nearly close...

Did your Aunt give up on Television in 1958? Not a bit of it. The Aunt mentioned moved back to South Devon in 1955. Another Aunt, who also resided in South Devon, had bought a television set in 1950 for the living room. Then, in 1954, she bought a second television for the dining room. Both Aunts were real enthusiasts for anything audio-visual. The first Aunt had seen television demonstrated at Selfridges in 1928! Yours,
