Ah but was Lulu from film recording or VT? And did they say it went out live?

Sunday Past Times is BBC-2, I didn't see it but I'll certainly watch next week, thanks for the tip off.

lulu the elephant was live, and it was said on the show that it was in the days before shows were pre re-ecordes and subsequently edited.
this is the fullest version of the lulu incident ive ever seen, ive seen loads everytime BP has an anniversary or Aunties bloomers
loads of tram lines on this one...
the other versions ive seen normally ends with "and lulu won't be there"..... <fade>
this version had the keeper dragged out the studio on his ass

In that period (68/69) quite a few "Blue Peter"s were recorded the day before, including this one... This edition was from July 1969, which wasn't in any way before programmes were recorded and edited - the incident was left in because it made good tv (and you can't get elephants to do retakes!) Interesting about the tramlines - another thing about this episode is that it exists both as a film recording and as the original VT - so there's no need to show a crappy copy like that...! I suspect they may have sourced it from another compilation programme rather than check out the original material.
