In Dave's 1996 autobiography, he describes an appearance on "Beat Club" in 1969 performing his single "Hold My Hand": The appearance is highlighted because Dave describes how minutes before he was due on, he was involved in a dressing room sexcapade, and had to throw his clothes on and rush on set which led to him being unable to take the appearance seriously and crack up onscreen!
I would have thought that given Beat Club's survival in it's entirety, that if this actually happened it would have turned up somewhere by now: is it possible that Dave was mistaken in which TV show it was (maybe it was a wiped show like Sweet N Hot?).. or possibly due to his poor performance the Beat Club spot was canned and never used?

An entry for the day 'Hold My Hand' was released -17th January 1969 - in "The Kinks All Day and All of the Night" by Doug Hinman reads -
"Dave's promotional dates are cancelled at the last moment, including a TV spot on Beat-Club due to be video taped in Bremen on January 24th, as well as further TV and radio spots in West Germany and Holland in the days following"

Thanks for that John. I have Doug Hinman's book and I recall that entry: I should have double checked myself before posting!
However, if that info is true, it does make me wonder what Dave is remembering in his book, as he goes into a reasonable amount of detail about the set up of the show. He seems to remember the incident too specifically for there not to be something to base it on. Is it possible he did make it over to Germany, but that his appearance was never used due to his drugged up condition and performance?

There's some footage of Dave on Beat Beat Beat in which he is seen flicking v signs at some unknown target.
The song was Death of a Clown I think and Dave is in splendid Carnaby Street Dandylike clothes.
Could Dave be misremembering this?

In Autumn Almanac on TOTP, he seems especially cheerful ...

Could be that Dave recalled the correct song but the wrong location/programme. Thanks to William Mcgregor's research we now know that Dave would have almost certainly performed "Hold My Hand" on "Discotheque", which would make the sexcapade even naughtier (IF that was the programme it happened on) given that it was a children's show. Somebody alert the Daily Mail!

Dave performed "Death of a Clown" on Beat Club (22.7.67) and "Susannah's Still Alive" (13.1.68) - I bought the admittedly expensive boxed sets of the complete Beat Club shows, and the quality is superb. Worth buying, especially as presenter Uschi Nerke is a delight and deserved a medal for not giving occasional presenter DLT a knee in the groin for his antics!

DLT was not an "occasional" presenter at Beat-Club, he was the regular co-host with Uschi between 1967 and 1969 (Episodes 18 - 46) and at the time they were more than "just good friends" ! After the last episode he did for BC, he joined the BBC!

Wrong choice of word, not 'occasional' - but I was aware that DLT was not a longterm presenter (unlike Uschi). "More than just good friends" eh? I'm surprised that Uschi didn't have better taste.. DLT always came across like a complete kn*bhead, even in his BBC days.
