The BBC's Treasure Hunt website lists episode 14: Journey, of the colour, 8th, series as only existing as a b/w telerecording, did the colour VT get stolen from/mislaid by, the archives or was it deliberately wiped?
An magazine interview with Eric Sykes, mentioned him having old betamax videos of his shows- could the BBC have made him a colour copy of series 8 episode 14 while the original mastertape was available? I remember one episode having a scene shot on film, seemingly unnecessarily- Eric falls off the roof grabbing hold of his TV aerial, resulting in the living room telly being lifted in the air by its aerial lead, this happens on film with very little of the set showing. Would this have been too difficult to accomplish in the usual tv studio and so shot in a film studio, I don't think it actually looks spectacular or dangerous enough to need shooting in a film studios?
Why does unedited studio footage of Sykes exist, was it kept for a specific purpose or just overlooked when it should have been wiped?

Whilst on the subject of Sykes, I remember the funniest sketch I ever saw when he was in a washer making factory, a line of machinists

OOPS!!!...Sorry!!.....pressed the send button (silly Boy)....anyway, as I was saying a line of Machinists in a washer making factory all moving at the exact same time to a record player...someone would slow it down, but the foreman would speed it up again, Sykes devised a way of quick production with, I think a head attachment....the items came pouring out....I creased up with laughter...does it still survive?...as I would love to see it again!...Thanks Guys.

Jason. Indeed Jason, it does... Can't remember what it's called, but it's on the latest (only as of the time of writing) DVD boxset - which you'd probably find on eBay, at a reasonable price...! BTW, All episodes contained within this DVD box set have been restored, and have probably never looked better, then thay do now... I know this, as I have it!

My guess about "Journey" not existing in colour would be that it was an accident - given that the rest of the series seems to survive complete. It may be that we will never know for certain why this happened - unless Mr Sykes knows! (But I doubt it.) Similarly, it is a weird thing that some studio recordings survive - but the same applies to the few other studio recordings of other shows: they shouldn't exist, but they do...!

I'm guerssing the 'Dad's Army' ones would be of most interest to the wider tv DVD market?

About the factory one. Was this a remake of an earlier B&W episode? I'm sure I remember seeing two different versions of this, one ending with aa card saying that if the Liberals won the next election the factory would still be at a standstill.

I can't answer that for sure (as I've only ever seen a couple of the B&W Sykes), but it wouldn't surprise me, as I know of a few other episodes (from other series) that seem to have done it... Although they're radio episodes (so not quite the same thing) some of the Hancock's Half Hours radio episodes, were (all bit it, somewhat loosely) remade for TV...

I get the feeling that it's entirely random why unedited studio footage survives for some and not for others; just good luck! Like why top quality studio footage for Dr Who Claws of Axos exists when some of the episodes don't even survive as 625 line VTs. I know it's a different channel, but isn't there a Callan that only exists as unedited studio footage, the transmitted version having long-since disappeared?

Jason. Just watched this episode, again, last night - it's called 'Job', on the DVD set. It's also listed as a 'previously unseen extented version', on the DVD inlay... BTW, As I've said elsewhere, this set has been restored, and it really does look brilliant! Anyone that hasn't got the set yet, and that likes Sykes, really should get it. As you'll be in for a real treat!
